The Big Switch
Oh yeah, guess who made “the switch?”
Yesterday my wife and I went to the mall, and I had no intention of doing what I did, but, well, I did.
After figuring out that if I ordered my new toy through the mail directly from Apple, I would not only have to pay the same tax as if I bought it in a local store, but I would also have to pay $33 in shipping and handling. Yeah sure. That makes sense.
So, with my wife’s educational discount, my $1099 off the shelf iBook came out to $1200, with a WiFi card, tax included.
Can’t argue with that, can you?
Oh, and as for the machine itself? Let’s just say I can see why people go gaga over the Mac OS. It’s pretty incredible…

I love OSX (I wish everyday that I could afford a powerbook ;-). It not only looks good, but it’s super stable and fast, and it’s BSD on the back end. What’s not to like? As for the GUI (Aqua), I read somewhere that Steve Jobs said he wanted a visual design that would make you want to lick the screen.

I’m surprised you didn’t go for this…
Talk about personal branding!

Tell me about it! Jeez! I damn near cracked up when I saw that. In fact, I have a draft post about it, I just forgot to write about it.
It is a creepy thing, though…

Wait a minute… Aren’t flaming liberals supposed to love the Mac OS? Jeez… Just when I thought I was joining the club!

Welcome to the club! You’re going to love it. I made the switch a few months ago, and the most frustrating thing at first is that everything is easy. While you’re looking for the typical windows solution, buried deep, all you have to do is hit the advance button on the window you’re in, and there is the selection. Enjoy.

It really is amazing how much of OS X is presented in such a small space without digging. I do miss the right mouse button, but I really have gotten over that quite well. It’s a brilliant OS that was obviously designed by people who had to use it.

Congratulations Vinny…I really wanted a new i-book but i need to run windows as thats the only OS that I can run the specialist software is use (VHDL programming and the like if anyone is intrested). I have used the OSX before and it is trully a brilliant system…I find the whole Mac/Windows incompatability a real shame.

Ctrl-click functions as a right-click on an iBook. If you ever get a separate mouse, or you someday get a desktop, a two- or three-button mouse will function in standard fashion after it is plugged in. (And *use* that right-click function in Safari to open tabs! Tabs rock!)
