Political Correctness in the Blood Supply

University Says Blood Drive Biased Against Gays
Friday, March 26, 2004

MONMOUTH, Ore. — The American Red Cross may soon be banned from holding blood drives on one university campus because the organization prohibits some gay men from donating blood.

“We’re looking at the practices of the Red Cross — whether they are discriminatory, and if they are, how it relates back to our policy,” said Gary Dukes, vice president of student affairs at Western Oregon University.

At issue is one of the dozens of questions used to screen donors. Men are asked if they’ve had sex with another man — even only once — since 1977.

Some student government leaders say the question is homophobic and has no place on campus, even if that means less blood available to those who need it.

“There may be less blood in the blood supply, or we can continue to have a world full of hate and discrimination,” said Shauna Bates, student senator at WOU.

The Food and Drug Administration, not the Red Cross, decides which groups can’t donate blood. Among them are anemics, intravenous drug users and sexually active gay men, who still comprise the largest percentage of AIDS cases.

The FDA did recently look at possibly changing, or even dropping, the question about gay sex. But an advisory committee said doing that would risk putting blood recipients in danger of contracting the deadly AIDS virus.

“It’s incredibly important that the blood supply remain safe,” said Darrin Greenlee of the American Red Cross.

Trying to keep people who are at high risk to have HIV from giving blood is no good because it’s “hateful?”

I really think certain people need to get off their hate high horse. Not everything is hateful. As the story says, certain demographics carry an increased risk of being infected with HIV. Doing what you can to make sure that the blood supply is not tainted is not hateful, it’s prudent.

    We need a social revolution.

Thanks, Geoff… We have now gone from Alanis to The Beatles…

You say you want a revolution
    Well you know
We all want to change the world
You tell me that it’s evolution
    Well you know
We all want to change the world
But when you talk about destruction
Don’t you know you can count me out
Don’t you know it’s gonna be alright
    Alright Alright

I am surprised that they aren’t screaming about racism too. Another series of questions asked when giving a donation concerns whether you have traveled to Africa or had sex with anyone that has. Oh wait, I forgot racism isn’t their scared cow so who cares. As mentioned this is only about keeping the blood supply safe. Unfortunately, gays and Africans have the highest instance of AIDS/HIV infection in the world, it is only prudent to get this info up front.

I’ve had to point out the exact cities that I went to when I answered that I have gone to both Africa and Philippines. This is not done for just AIDS, there are a number of diseases that travel the blood stream. This is why I was vaccinated for a number of diseases before I went to Africa.

Ying & yang. Balance, grasshopper. Maybe the gays would be satisfied with a parallel expose’ of heteros:
    1. Do you have sex without a condom and vaginal dam?
    2. Do you swing or have sex with more than one partner?
    3. Do you participate in anal sex?

Maybe these questions are already asked and as you say Vinny, one group is on a platform that defies common sense and the safety of the blood supply.

Do you really think this little girl who has yet to get out in the real world is a great humanitarian, fighting HATE were ever she finds it? You think this great new incarnation of Mother Terasa(SP?) lies awake at night worried sick about the social injustice that is rampent and threatning to overrun her University?
Or do you think she might be some silly spoiled brat that feels the need to be a part of something and chose defending Gays’ God given RIGHT, protected under the constitution, the Magna Carta, and the rules of fair play and Cricket, to give Blood?

I haven’t been able to donate blood for a long time, thanks to the question that asks if you’ve ever been treated for a blood disorder. Even though I’ve been in remission for 14 years, and even though leukemia isn’t contagious, they don’t want to take any risks.

And I don’t feel slighted in the least. I appreciate that they’re more concerned for the well-being of the people who would actually be on the receiving end of the blood than they are about my fragile ego.

And from a personal standpoint, I received a LOT of blood transfusions in 1990, and I, for one, am glad for a little quality control on the blood I was receiving from strangers.

    Hmmm… I guess common sense is universal…

Now if only these douchebags at the school had it.

To me it’s just a bunch of college kids looking to be cause-heads and just taking up the first cause that they come across, regardless of how much sense it makes.

Advocacy has its place in the world, but this kind of advocacy we don’t need.

Say it, don’t spray it, little girl. I might get the gay on me…

Hey, Vin, not to be rude or anything, because I am as guilty as this as anybody, but you really shouldn’t be surprised by this. People will embrace victimhood wherever they can find it, even if it is ridiculous.
