Just thought of this quote…
“We had a trauma, but it’s really not a national trauma. If you were not in New York on Sept. 11, what you saw was an event on CNN.”
-Morgan Freeman, June 2, 2002

I was thinking about this quote as I listened to 9/11 testimony yesterday.

Hmmm, let’s see, Iwasn’t in New York on 9/11/01, nor was I watching CNN. I was working in the offices of a small, 10-person company.
My immediate boss was attempting to call one of the members of the band in which he plays on weekends. That member worked at a Wall Street law firm and commutes upstate on weekends.
I was reading an e-mail from the administrative assistant in the company for which I contract on occasion, auditing billboards. She was asking for prayers for the auditing firm’s owner and president who was meeting with a prospective client 2 blocks from the world trade center.
I was following radio reports about a plane which was unaccounted for over Pennsylvania, last known to be heading east. Most of my aunts, uncles and cousins are in Philadelphia.
I was receiving a call from my mother, who stated that one of my cousins was in Washington DC, making a sales call for a medical supply company. As people started to realize what had happened, she started to go to the Pentagon to help. When she was unable to get near the site, she went back to the hospital where her experience in trauma care was put to use.
I was hearing the announcement that one of the beleived victims was a local woman, who also happened to be the wife of my high school class president.
That is just one person’s perspective, a person who is not well-travelled, has never spent more than the length of a baseball game in New York City. The personal stories of persons all over the nation on that day are endless.
Not a national trauma. Shame on you, Mr. Freeman.

As we were trying to get ahold of my boyfriend’s mother and sister….as we were trying to locate a friend’s brother….as we were in tears while watching the attacks on television here in Wisconsin - it was more than some ‘event’ on the news. It was our nation, our country, and our countrymen. It was horrendous. It was a tragedy. It was a deep time of sorrow for all Americans across this nation.
Morgan Freeman is insignificant.
