Why Google is still the best of the best…

They could have just let this go, instead they addressed it and quite thoroughly. I think they’re a class act…

An explanation of our search results.

If you recently used Google to search for the word “Jew,” you may have seen results that were very disturbing. We assure you that the views expressed by the sites in your results are not in any way endorsed by Google. We’d like to explain why you’re seeing these results when you conduct this search.

A site’s ranking in Google’s search results is automatically determined by computer algorithms using thousands of factors to calculate a page’s relevance to a given query. Sometimes subtleties of language cause anomalies to appear that cannot be predicted. A search for “Jew” brings up one such unexpected result.

If you use Google to search for “Judaism,” “Jewish” or “Jewish people,” the results are informative and relevant. So why is a search for “Jew” different? One reason is that the word “Jew” is often used in an anti-Semitic context. Jewish organizations are more likely to use the word “Jewish” when talking about members of their faith. The word has become somewhat charged linguistically, as noted on websites devoted to Jewish topics such as these:

• http://www.jewishworldreview.com/cols/jonah081500.asp

Someone searching for information on Jewish people would be more likely to enter terms like “Judaism,” “Jewish people,” or “Jews” than the single word “Jew.” In fact, prior to this incident, the word “Jew” only appeared about once in every 10 million search queries. Now it’s likely that the great majority of searches on Google for “Jew” are by people who have heard about this issue and want to see the results for themselves.

Our search results are generated completely objectively and are independent of the beliefs and preferences of those who work at Google. Some people concerned about this issue have created online petitions to encourage us to remove particular links or otherwise adjust search results. Because of our objective and automated ranking system, Google cannot be influenced by these petitions. The only sites we omit are those we are legally compelled to remove or those maliciously attempting to manipulate our results.

We apologize for the upsetting nature of the experience you had using Google and appreciate your taking the time to inform us about it.

Sincerely,
The Google Team

p.s. You may be interested in some additional information the Anti-Defamation League has posted about this issue at http://www.adl.org/rumors/google_search_rumors.asp. In addition, we call your attention to both the Jewish Internet Association, an organization that addresses online anti-semitism, at http://www.jewishinternetassociation.org/, and Google’s search results on this topic.

In all fairness, this one generated quite a bit of controversy mostly because of the top site on the results list…

I wonder if the google folks bothered to check out the site in question. sorry, but considering their host dropped them, I wonder why Google couldn’t remove it from their search results? It’s not about PC, it’s about shutting down those who seek to spread hate.

the hosting company did the right thing. google just danced.

  • Kevin

nathalie, are you really comfortable with having Google or say the Government decide what can or can not be posted? Don’t get me wrong I’m not defending the message, just the right for all to post a message. Who and how is going to control this screening process?

  • http://turningwheels.blogspot.com nathalie

google removed Indy Media from their news feed when they realized what they are made of. They didn’t have them removed from the Web, just removed from their news feed. In my opinion, Google’s news is as legitimate as the sources they use. Indy Media is not a legitimate news source, no matter how you spin it. I’m not talking government here, I’m talking about a company having the opportunity to take the high road and remove the filth from their search results. my email provider filters spam– does this infringe on peoples rights to post things? nope, it just makes the end-user experience much more enjoyable. as far as screening, they got a few emails about this particular site, just as they got a lot of emails about Indy Media being in their News section. They pushed back on removing Indy Media at first, but now it’s gone. rightfully.

all I’m saying is Google can do whatever they want with their site. This site is pure hatred, and why Google would hesitate to remove it from their search results is beyond me. this is all my opinion, of course. as I understand it, the first amendment applies our freedoms as they relate to the government. Any company can make their own rules on what they decide to allow or disallow. this has nothing to do with rights, imho. it’s all about removing any legitimacy from sites like the one in question. I’ve known about that site for a long time, and couldn’t believe that it came up in the results of a search engine. but that’s just me…

I think Google should leave every single piece of filth in their search results just on a free speech principle, however the reason this has created an all out war is that Google themselves are being blamed as if they have some sort of control over where results appear.

That misconception is what caused the problem, not some goofball hate site.

  • Kevin

I understand not wanting to give hate mongers a podium or any support in spreading their message. But I would rather decide what messages I receive and choose to listen to, than to have that decision made for me.
I’ve seen some of the “high roads”, some choose to take and frankly they are not for me. The high road back in the 40′s and 50′s in the South and I suspect in other parts of the country was to ignore the injustice done to Jews. This was championed by community and religous leaders, people that you would normally feel comfortable making these kinds of decisions (as opposed to unseen unknown persons running a search engine).
In a society were freedom of speech is a corner stone of the rights enjoyed by all, you have to take the good with the bad. The price you pay is exposure to the ugly side of the world. And believe it or not, that’s a good thing. People need to be shaken up once in awhile and made to see the filth out there, to be reminded that all is not well in our perfect little world. That we still need to struggle for what is right, for the world we want for our kids. I am constantly amazed to find people who do not have a clue as to what is going on in the world around them.

I understand fully how Google’s search results work. and this, to me, has nothing to do with free speech. web sites are shut down all the time for various reasons, but this is not what I’m talking about. it’s lending validity to sites like these that bugs me. like I said, I knew about this site long before this incident because somebody left the link within an anti-semitic comment in my blog. I get plenty of exposure already, and really don’t Google’s help to be aware of the realities in this world.

every day I check dozens of email messages as spam, and Yahoo/Comcast uses that information to make my experience with their service better. how is that any different than removing a hate site from a search result? does this site really need any more exposure? trust me when I say that many, many online Jews already were aware of this site. I wonder how google would handle an Aryan site at the #1 spot for a search on “Negro”?
