Yahoo! News – Sharon says Arafat “will get what he deserves”

“Sharon says Arafat “will get what he deserves”

JERUSALEM (AFP) – Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon (news – web sites) renewed his threats against arch enemy Yasser Arafat (news – web sites), insisting the Palestinian leader “would get what he deserves” as he recalled the fate of two assassinated leaders of the radical Hamas movement.

“I have already said that we have acted against the heads of Hamas and against others in the manner that we have judged the most appropriate and at a time we judge most convenient,” Sharon told public radio late Tuesday.

“When the time comes to deal with this case (Arafat), we will act in the same fashion.”

Promise?

Who is going to deal with the terrorist leader Sharon in a similar fashion, I wonder? Iranian nukes? That will be the default outcome if things don’t change over there…

  • http://www.insignificantthoughts.com Vinny

Wow Steven. Sharon is a terrorist.

There’s a unique and insightful thought.

  • pete from astoria

Steven. What do you mean by change? Does that mean that Israel should capitulate to all Palestinian demands? If it does, than all Israelis should commit suiside since the stated, often repeated goal of the Palestinian terrorists is to “push Israel into the sea”. How does one negotiate with that?

  • http://www.insignificantthoughts.com Vinny

    That’s what I don’t get.

I’ve never heard an Israeli say his goal is to eliminate Palestinians from the face of the earth.

Yet I have heard similar things from Palestinians, including Yasser Arafat’s PLO logo which has a blood red state of Israel, which was meant to represent Palestine. In other words “Palestine” was actually all of Israel.

    Sure. Negotiate with them.

    Just like Barak.

  • steven

I suppose Ariel’s nickname of ‘The Butcher’ comes from the sweetmeats he prepares for Arab children? Are vile acts excusable when one fights the hoardes of evil?

“But they want to drive Israel into the ocean.” Sadly true. So will the Israelis exterminate the Palestinians (maybe even the rest of Dar-al Islam) instead? Why do I say something that extreme? It doesn’t take a genius to see that indirectly creating 10 terrorists every time one is directly removed will assure an endless struggle. Since when does that kind of (sloppy) whack-a-mole strategy work?

A tenuous comparison can be made to the War on Drugs. The harshest drug laws in the land (NY State) have resulted in nothing but full prisons with no reduction in drugs. DEA agents are about as intense as Israeli soldiers, from what I have seen of both. They try very hard, win most battles, yet do not gain traction in the war.

So fine, no negotiations. No mercy, since survival is at stake. Continue heavy-handed collective punishments, continue spying on New Zealand (?!), continue injecting poison into the neck of evil terrorists on the street, continue accidentally killing protesters, continue stealing secrets from America. Just don’t expect me to consider such behaviors more civilized than bombing crowds.

Rhetorical Wager: If Israel manages to outlive the Crusader States, I eat my hat. Promise.

Steven, I have been watching your comments here for a while and I finally had to jump in.

First, the Israelis are NOT trying to exterminate the Palestinians. The much-maligned wall they are contructing is an example of the fact that the Israelis want to keep to themselves and live in peace. Their offensive actions are necessary responses to the perpetual attacks and homicide bombings. The Israelis do not have the murder of each and every Palestinian on their agenda. I wish the same was true on the other side.

Second, I don’t think your DEA analogy has any relevance to the issue. How can you compare American law enforcement officers to a military fighting for its survival. No disrespect to the hard-working DEA folks, but it doesn’t apply to this argument.

And finally, back to your first paragraph, do you condemn Mr. Sharon for his alleged “vile” acts during a war while accepting Senator Kerry’s admitted atrocities as necessary? I don’t know your position on this. I am merely trying to point out that many deviant actions are found to be tolerable if you believe in the political agenda of the one commiting the act.

  • steven

So how does Israel fight “for survival” against a population that wants to “drive it into the ocean”? The implicit answer is: kill everyone who wants to hurt Israel. In the meantime try to build the perfect defense, which is not possible, and keep the captive-population-status-quo. One side in missile-laden F-16s, the other with nail bombs on buses, no end in sight.

The DEA and Israel are both fighting futile Wars with flawed strategies and extravagant technology. They each win most every battle they fight but do not Win. There is indeed a connection there. Tenuous, did you miss that qualifier?

Now please, for the sake of discussion, refer me to Senator Kerry’s admitted atrocities. The ones he himself committed. A web link will be fine if you don’t want to type.

  • http://www.insignificantthoughts.com Vinny

How about this gem from the Dick Cavett Show in 1971:

I personally didn’t see personal atrocities in the sense that I saw somebody cut a head off or something like that. However, I did take part in free fire zones. I did take part in harassment and interdiction fire. I did take part in search and destroy missions, in which the houses of noncombatants were burned to the ground. And all of these, I find out later on, these acts are contrary to the Hague and Geneva conventions and to the laws of warfare. So in that sense, anybody who took part in those, if you carry out the application of the Nuremberg principles is, in fact, guilty.

  • steven

So you are equating the junior officer following orders with the Minister of Defense who bore personal responsibility for a great massacre (among lesser massacres)?

Funny that the American government did not agree with your interpretation of Kerry’s actions, yet the Kahan commission agreed with my interpretation of Sharon’s. Please refer me to any official findings on Kerry that back your assertions, for parity’s sake.

  • http://www.insignificantthoughts.com Vinny

Now please, for the sake of discussion, refer me to Senator Kerryís admitted atrocities. The ones he himself committed. A web link will be fine if you donít want to type.

You have your answer and Kerry’s admission.

    Case closed.

  • steven

You are stupid. Case closed on that, too.

  • http://www.insignificantthoughts.com Vinny

LOL. That’s a riot. I’m stupid yet you spend hours on here diverting threads.

You must be a genius; one who can’t read.

  • steven

Riiiiiight. Good one, there. Makes lots of sense.

  • steven

Sniping aside for a moment, here is Sharon, the terrorist, in his own words.

“I vow that if I was just an Israeli civilian and I met a Palestinian I would burn him and I would make him suffer before killing him. With one hit I’ve killed 750 Palestinians (in Rafah in 1956). I wanted to encourage my soldiers by raping Arabic girls as the Palestinian women is a slave for Jews, and we do whatever we want to her and nobody tells us what we shall do but we tell others what they shall do….I don’t know something called International Principles. I vow that I’ll burn every Palestinian child (that) will be born in this area. The Palestinian woman and child is more dangerous than the man, because the Palestinian child’s existence infers that generations will go on, but the man causes limited danger.”

    Do you admire that attitude?

  • http://www.insignificantthoughts.com Vinny

Odd that you would post an inflammatory quote like that without a source.

  • steven

A 1956 interview with Israeli General Ouze Merham.

  • http://www.insignificantthoughts.com Vinny

Source means a direct link to where the info appeared, not some vague reference to an interview.

    Thanks.

As I see it, killing Arafat is a favor to the Palestinians. He has been their “leader” while amassing a large fortune at their expense. Arafat is a predatory gangster and is not even a Palestinian but an Egyptian.

I definitely think there is room for improvement in how Israel treats Palestine, but its a two way street, and getting rid fo Arafat would probably benefit Palestinains immensely. Capitalism would also benefit Palestinians, too.

  • http://www.insignificantthoughts.com Vinny

Well, as many have said, the Israelis never attack without provocation.

    Ever.

If Palestinians would stop blowing themselves up on buses, and in pizza parlors, and in discotheques, there would be no conflict.

  • steven

But when Israel does attack it inflicts as much collateral damage as possible. Spitefully, self-righteously (like the tone of your statement).

And the reason for the conflict is just…unprovoked suicide bombings. Yep. That is such a fucking assinine thing to say, I hope you don’t actually believe it.
