The County Map Is Stupid. Get Rid of It!

To all the people who keep touting that county map like it’s the gospel, pay attention because this is directed squarely at you. All of you. Particularly the “Bush Country” zealots who insist that 51-48 is somehow a bigger landslide because of the map.

Here’s the way the map really flows. No winner takes all here. The bluer the county, the more it went for Kerry. The redder the state, the more it went for Bush. Purple states (somewhere in between) mean that it was closer to 50/50. Understand now?

That being said, here’s the actual map:

Interesting how all the population centers are much closer to purple and blue, than they are to red, isn’t it?

Oh, and let’s not even get into the idiocy of claiming some massive landslide because red covers some really large counties out west. Unless tumbleweeds, dirt, and cactii start voting, it’s utterly irrelevant if a county in the middle of the Nevada desert manages to go red with a final tally of 10 votes Bush, 1 vote Kerry.

Just because Bush counties cover a larger landmass doesn’t mean more people are there voting for Bush. Now can you please take the maps down and stop crowing about them?

You look frigging stupid.

I’m glad you posted this version of the map, because it clarifies my own county in upstate New York. We’ve been hearing how Oswego County turned its back on its traditional Republican leanings because of the high unemployment here. However, looking at the shaded map (the actual numbers for this county have so far eluded me) it looks like it was much closer to a tie here. The same holds true for Onondaga County (city of Syracuse NY) whic is also a healthy shade of purple.

What I think both versions of the map help to highlight is the the cultural divide in America, between urban and rural citizens.

Actually I think what it does even more than that is solidify that winner takes all electoral voting isn’t necessarily representative of the will of the people.

Actaully, when it comes to elections, the founding fathers were more concerned with the will of the country than the will of the people.

After all, we’re not a democracy.

    Just popping in late, Vinny.
