Yahoo! News – Ariz. Requires Citizenship Proof to Vote
PHOENIX – Arizona has become the first state to require proof of citizenship when registering to vote, a measure that supporters say is intended to prevent voter fraud.

The law went into effect Tuesday after being approved by voters in November. It requires that people provide proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate, when registering to vote and show specified forms of identification when casting a ballot at a polling place.

A civil-rights group and Democratic legislators recently had urged the Department of Justice (news – web sites) to reject the law. They argued the changes will erect barriers that will hinder minorities’ participation in elections and hamper grassroots voter registration drives.

You mean you actually have to prove you are a citizen to place a vote for the leader of the country you’re in?

And I love how they always add that it’s a hinderance to minorities. What, do blacks and hispanics not have ID or something?

I swear to God, the stupidity that flows forth from the mouth of the left on this country is just unreal sometimes. Make note minorities, as you mindlessly vote 75% Democratic; they think you’re too stupid to produce ID.

    How true! Minorities, (particularly blacks) were singled out by the liberals and the media for being too stupid to vote on the infamous butterfly ballot during the 2000 presidential election in Florida. Instead of being outraged, most blacks just agreed with the assessment. Blacks were also basically being called cowards by the left in the constant inference that they were being intimidated into not voting in 2000 and 2004. Let me tell you that the black people I know would not simply walk away from a polling station because someone was “intimidating” them. I guess if you belong to a particular political party you can get away with impugning the character of a whole race.

    Does the Left wish to pretend voter fraud isn’t a reality? I suppose that’s a minor delusion compared to their denial that we are in a real live war.

    Voter fraud is only voter fraud when they lose. See, for example, California. The balloting system that elected Grey Davis was suddenly no longer effective when voting for Arnold (most likely because they knew that Arnold was going to win). It’s the same everywhere, they’re just better at playing that game.

    Wisconsin tried to pass a similar law twice in the last few years. Recent evidence of voter fraud, especially in Milwaukee, helped it gain popular support. It would require voters to show valid ID when they go vote. Nothing more.

    Our Democratic governor vetoed it both times. The veto was almost overridden the second time. Reason for the vetoes? The governor claimed that making people have to show ID when voting would “disenfranchise” minorities and homeless.
