Yahoo! News – Palestinians Attack Israeli Settlements
Palestinians Attack Israeli Settlements

By JOSEF FEDERMAN, Associated Press Writer

JERUSALEM – Palestinian militants on Thursday fired dozens of mortar shells and homemade rockets at Jewish settlements in the Gaza Strip (news – web sites), prompting Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas to order his security forces to move quickly to preserve a new cease-fire with Israel.

The Israeli army said there were no injuries in the mortar attacks. But the flare-up in violence, which has included the fatal shootings of two Palestinians, has presented the first serious test to the truce declared by the Israeli and Palestinian leaders this week.

Yep, that didn’t take long. Hamas just couldn’t bring itself to lay down its arms.

I’m sure all the left-wingers who blame Sharon for everything that goes wrong in Israel will surely be all over Hamas for damaging the peace process.

I mean, I know they can’t blame Israel for a mortar attack by Palestinians, but you can bet your sweet ass that there won’t be one single word of outrage from the left hemisphere of the blogosphere criticizing Hamas.

Nope.

It’ll be silence, because you can’t defend Israel if you’re a leftist. It’s against the code or something, and they take your key to the secret clubhouse in the basement of Michael Moore.

If Israel had started building new settlements, though, those same leftists would be crowing right now. Just goes to show that most leftists are simply anti-Israel. Not anti-Zionist. Not pro-Palestinian. Just anti-Israel.

If you don’t believe me, hit the left-wing sites you frequent. Go ahead. You can bet most of them won’t mention this story in any capacity, and the ones that do will find something to criticize Israel about.

It’s scandalous ain’t it? We on the left should most certainly be taking our lessons from the way IT and all the other right-wing blogs were all over the shooting of that Palestinian guy by the Israeli army within 24 hours of the deal.

I also hang my head when I remember how the right in general came out in such force and condemned the Israeli shooting of the Palestinian guy who was taking his pregnant neighbour to the hospital last month. Truely, after reading the scathing commentary showing how completly and utterly disgusted over the whole thing sites like LGF were I can come to no conclusion other than we on the left are simple pale, biased, and intolerant shadows of the nonagenda driven right.

On behalf of all reasonable bloggers who have their tents, or basement bunkers as the case may be, on the left bank of the main stream I offer my most sincere apologies for our collective slackness and promise to try harder to emulate the completely fair and unbiased blogging practices of those on the right bank of our shared stream – please, forgive us.

Personally, I think the most important aspect of the story lies not in who initiated the attack, but who reacted to it: Mahmoud Abbas, ordering his people to act against the Palestinians launching the attack.

A question coming out of the election was whether he would have the cojones to police the various, fractured Palestinian militant factions: it looks like he’s at least making an attempt of it, which is more than Arafat ever did.

Looks to me like he’s doing exactly what his terrorist buddy did: giving lipservice to the western media.

Ever hear an Arafat speech that wasn’t supposed to be heard in the western media? He saved his best “stuff” for when the western cameras weren’t rolling. I don’t believe a word that comes out the PLO unless it’s backed by some action, and in the many years I’ve been paying attention, I’ve not seen anything that resembles action.

Plenty of times. But you were probably too busy playing with more important things like Octopi, Monkeys and your dog.

In fact, in this very post, I said Sharon’s motivations were probably only half honorable.

Now go along and play with your little friends. You’re not welcome here.
