Dumb… Obviously Dumb…

Mike Whitney writing for Al Jazeera, the press arm of Al Qaida for many years now, came up with the dumbest quote ever uttered in a major publication:

Two years ago Bush loyalists were bucketing their French wine into America’s gutters, while vitriolic Congressmen derided the French as “cheese-eating surrender monkeys”.

Oh really? I never heard a Congressman say those words.

That is, of course, unless Groundskeeper Willy has suddenly been elected to office in Springfield…

The name-calling sounds from sea to shining sea. Everybody’s quoting the slur first uttered by Groundskeeper Willie on “The Simpsons” — “cheese-eating surrender monkeys.”

Thanks to the Washington Post for putting the origin of that quote into black and white. And screw you Mr. Whitney for attributing a quote to a group of people who never even said it.

Al Jazeera playing it fair and balanced. Osama would be proud.

Thanks for the heads-up on this one to Scott!

Or Mark Hyman quoting Groundskeeper Willie, which I found while checking on this because I didn’t recall any Congress folk using the phrase either. Friend Google tells us that many r/w websites did pick up on the term and have a field day with it, but no government types.

I find it truly strange in this day of the Internet how so many people in so many places seem to completely forget that if it’s said/published on the ‘net Google will have it somewhere.

This is true. It’s funny how you can always tell the entrenched old media people from the newer media people.

The old make mistakes that are easily found out by Google.

The new make mistakes you have to go back to a book to correct.

I think it was supposed to be funny. Like, he says elsewhere that he expected Condoleeza Rice to be wearing a hair shirt. I don’t think he was actually expecting Condoleeza Rice to be wearing a hair shirt: I think he was just kidding.

Truth isn’t the first victim of war: unfortunately, humour is.

His quote was flat out wrong, and it appeared in Al Jazeera. Do you think the highly sophisticated people of Iran, Syria, and Yemen are reading it laughing, or reading it fuming over the hateful american dogs that are slaughtering their innocent brethren and who are in the pocket of the zionist entity?

Honestly answer that question and you’ll see why it’s so annoying.

He not only got the source of the quote absolutely wrong, but look where he made the mistake.

In the author’s defense, he really hasn’t misquoted anyone here. The literal definition of “derided” -To speak of or treat with contemptuous mirth.-
He never really attributes that quote to anyone. However, any reader not paying extremely close attention is bound to interpret that as a direct quote from some congressman. He doesn’t really commit any blatant dishonesty here. Necertheless, shame on him for working so hard to manipulate his audience and failing to report the news objectively.

Well, in fairness it was an opinion piece, but I do agree that he did mislead people.

    Well said, Patrick.

(God, who’da thunk I’d ever say those words?)

I think this is a piece written in English for the English language print service of Al Jazeera: so if what you’re asking is, “did it’s intended readership get the joke…then, yeah, probably.

I mean, between you and I, 50% of us got it.

It was so funny I nearly puked.

You all forgot one important point:

The French are cheese-eating surrender monkeys.

But otherwise, I agree with Vinny on this one.
