You think mentioning creation is a bad thing? You think calling evolution a (gasp!) theory is bad? You think we got problems?

The potential problem has arisen in teaching about Muhammad. The exam board requires that every time Muhammad is written, the letters “pbuh” in parentheses be placed after it. This is shorthand for “peace be upon him”. The writer therefore prays a blessing upon him everytime his name is written, as is the custom of Muslims. So I have to tell my students (over and over if there is any hope of them remembering) that they must bless Muhammad every time they mention his name.

What is there to say about this? Honestly? It sucks? It’s wrong?

It’s one thing to ask someone to learn another religion, as Holford notes, on a comparitive basis. But the idea that you would have to say Peace Be Upon Him to some God that people don’t pray to?

Tell ya what. Let’s have everyone write a Hail Mary every time they talk about catholicism. That oughta cover it.

    I cannot believe that Muhammad (f.h.) gets this kind of respect in the U.K. Then again, the U.K. also houses that one Islamist nut (forgot his name) that the US was trying to get a hold of for aiding terrorists, funding their training, and sending wanna-bes to training camps. This scum bag would preach in (I think it was) downtown London, to a mob of Muslims, and tell them that 9/11 was great, and America and Israel needed to be destroyed, etc. (you know, the usual Muslim line).

    If I were one of this guys students, I would bring a copy of the Koran (f.i.) to recess and have fun burning it with my friends. (Okay, I wouldn’t really, but you get the point :-)

    Sounds like this guy is talking bullshit to me. I couldn’t find any info about where he teaches, but I’m sure (as a ranting atheist living in the UK) I would have heard if this was happening. It’s fairly secular over here (there are some archaic laws about blasphemy and stuff, although they are generally ignored unless one of the more fundamentalist groups get annoyed over something).

    This is yet another great example of the slow suicide that this once great nation is hell bent on committing. They have let Muslim immigration grow out of control to the point where the Muslim community practically runs the country. I’ve read certain demographic studies that project England becoming a Muslim majority nation in as early as 20 years under current conditions. Does anyone feel that’s a positive thing? Hopefully we can use this slow demise as a wake-up call for ourselves.

    After all the fuss over a conversation with a colleague while planning lessons, taken completely out of context and misunderstood by most of the people who commented on it, I have received the following from OCR:

    “OCR will always put ‘peace be upon him’ after Muhammad in the form of an Arabic colophon as a mark of respect. However we do not expect candidates to do this.

    A reference to this can be found on page 13 of the OCR GCSE Religious Studies Notes for Guidance.”

    I hope that whoever has picked up the other post, whether it was quoted in full or in part, will post this as well and tell people to stop emailing OCR.

    As I said in comments to the original post, I never based my information on anything from OCR – I only said that was the exam board we used.

    England has realy become a mess these last few years i mean the british parlament has given crinimals the free run of the country and a guy has been snt to jail for shooting a burglar that broke into his house i mean the inmates are now running the asilum in england:eek:

    Actually the guy was sent to jail for shooting the burglar in the back as he chased him down the street. Defending yourself in your own home is one thing, but following after an intruder and then attacking him is something else (vengance rather than self defense)
