The NHL Season Is Officially Cancelled

Just to put this cancellation in perspective, it was over a salary cap.

The “last ditch” offer from the league was a $42 million salary cap (per team).

The “last ditch” counter offer from the players was a $49 million salary cap (per team).

That means $7 million cancelled the NHL season. Good job guys.

Can you say penny-wise, pound foolish?

Seven million times what is it, thiry teams? Now $210 million is a lot more, but, of course, with no season this year (and who knows what will happen to attendance if they ever come back), I’m guessing much more money was lost.

The local paper has had plenty of articles recently about how the strick has been COMPLETELY devastating to small business owners near the hockey arena.

Yeah, but that’s the problem. It’s 30 teams!

It’s not like the league is laying out the money, and it’s not like each time is laying out $210 million!

So in effect, the season was cancelled for $7 million. Either way, they might have just sealed the fate of the league, and it’s tragic.

I’ll watch when / if it comes back, but I know plenty of people who won’t.

The fact that these professional leagues that pay their players millions upon millions, whose players all have contracted agents to negotiate contracts with their employers still feel they have some need for players unions is astounding.

In some good news, though, it looks as though Todd Bertuzzi’s once-paltry 17 game suspension will last much, much longer. Here’s hoping he never skates again.

    Good. I agree.

    One can hope…

I heard a sports writer say that hockey has just been passed by Texas Hold’em as the fourth major U.S. sport.

    Funny, and sad.

Times how many teams? How many teams actually have that payroll on their books – I think you’d find them in the minority.

As of today the official stageleft unofficial poll say that 60% of respondents (don’t ‘cha love numbers) don’t give a rats a** – I am numbered among them.

    Go 67′s!!

The only reason you don’t care is ’cause you have the CHL. I have nothing :-(
