Rhodes Apologizes for ‘Gunshot Skit’

Randi Rhodes, shrill harpee who is never called one by the “Ann Coulter is a bitch” crowd because she agrees with them, had this to say yesterday:

Air America radio host: Punish me if I broke law
Rhodes apologizes to Bush, Secret Service for ‘gunshots’ skit she says was not funny

A liberal radio talk-show host who aired a comedy skit featuring an apparent gunshot warning to President Bush has apologized, and says she’s not afraid of being prosecuted over the matter.

“This was just a stupid, stupid bit!” exclaimed Randi Rhodes on yesterday’s broadcast on the Air America network. “But, if it crossed the line, then certainly, there must be punishment, and if there is, I want to be punished so that I can actually say ‘Equal justice under law.’ Anybody that has stepped over this line of law needs to be prosecuted, including me.”

I know. It goes on on both sides… So why don’t you show me an example where it went on with a Republican threatening to kill a Democrat?

We have the Florida Democratic Club saying Rumsfeld needs to be put on a wall and shot.

We have Alec Baldwin saying he wanted to “stone Henry Hyde” and his family.

We have Randi Rhodes playing a skit on her show (now mind you, it’s a radio show, so she has ultimate say in what goes on the air) with someone shooting the President.

For something that goes on plenty on both sides, we sure don’t see a lot of examples going the other way.

And they can’t figure out why their ratings are so bad:?:

  • Patrick

One need only poke their head into the archives of Anne Coulter’s hate-filled rhetoric to find examples…

And actually, Pam, their ratings are getting better at an incredible rate.

  • http://www.insignificantthoughts.com Vinny

Oh cool Patrick. So you have examples where Ann Coulter threatened to kill Democrat politicians!?

    Oh please share!

  • Patrick

“My only regret with Timothy McVeigh is he did not go to the New York Times Building.”

“We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity. We weren’t punctilious about locating and punishing only Hitler and his top officers. We carpet-bombed German cities; we killed civilians. That’s war. And this is war.”

“We need to execute people like (John Walker Lindh) in order to physically intimidate liberals.”

“If you don’t hate Clinton and the people who labored to keep him in office, you don’t love your country.”

“I really want to hurt him. I want him to feel pain.” (Referring to the possibility of running against a Democratic Representative)
as quoted in the Hartford Courant, June 25, 1999

“People like you caused us to lose the war.” (to a disabled Vietnam Veteran)

Some of these quotes answer your question and some of them don’t. I included the ones of no clear relevance to make understandable that this type of hate mongering you allege Ms. Rhodes of is just as prevalant among conservative pundits.

  • http://www.insignificantthoughts.com Vinny

    Actually, none of them do.

  • Patrick

Okay Vnny. So a fake threat meant at evoking laughter is outrageously immoral but wishing death upon innocents at a major newspaper is okay? Now I see where you’re coming from…

  • http://www.insignificantthoughts.com Vinny

    No.

    Here’s the question:

Oh cool Patrick. So you have examples where Ann Coulter threatened to kill Democrat politicians!?

Feel free to provide this proof at any time.

    Thanks.

  • Patrick

And I provided you with instances where Anne wished for the destruction of very important leg of our democracy…

Same concept? Or are you going to prove that an blatantly fake threat is worse than anything Anne Coulter has said?

  • http://www.insignificantthoughts.com Vinny

I asked for examples of the “same thing.”

We always hear there’s “plenty of that” on both sides.

Well, let’s see where Republicans threatened to stone a man and his family, cocked a gun at them, or insisted they be put up against a wall and shot.

    Thanks.

I didn’t know that The New York Times was “a very important leg of our democracy.” I guess that would make Maureen Dowd a varicose vein or something.

In what markets are Air America’s ratings increasing?

  • http://www.insignificantthoughts.com Vinny

More like the rash you get when you’re really fat and your inner thighs rub together.

  • Patrick

Well, many would consider the mainstream press to be an important institution of our democracy. I guess you’re too dense to see that though, Dave.

  • http://www.insignificantthoughts.com Vinny

Unless the mainstream press is part of the government, you still haven’t answered the question.

Guess it doesn’t really happen so often on “both sides.”

  • http://www.thewaterglass.net Dave D

I only wish I were one tenth as smart as you, Patrick, so I could characterize one news outlet as “a very important leg of our democracy.”

Let me know how high those Air America radio ratings get in the meantime; all the evidence points to their hovering at zip, near zilch right now. You know: same level as your facility for critical thinking.

  • Patrick

I only wish I were one tenth as smart as you, Patrick, so I could characterize one news outlet as “a very important leg of our democracy.”

-I wish you were too. This conversation might be more enthralling if you were…

In certain markets, the ratings are doing much better. take, for instance the subscription radio market. I mean, it doesn’t stand a chance against the well funded and established conservative AM radio but it’s fighting where it can.

If your penchant for hurling baseless and often witless epithets at me is central to your view of “critical thinking”, then sure, your intellect has yet to be matched. Keep up the good work, Dave.

The fact of the matter is, that the skit was simply a joke. This TYPE
of hateful and tasteless punditry is a ubiquitous occurance anymore. This TYPE of commentary is prevalant on both ends of the political spectrum. Some seem unwilling to admit this though and say that since Anne Coulter didn’t specifically threaten a government official, her comments aren’t worth consideration. So, Vinny, I’ll remember this when the dynamics of the debate evolve and you’re forced to defend the concept or implication of a thought and disregard its literal definition.

    Patrick,
Nice writing. You are clearly thoughtful and educated. Dave and Vinnie clearly are not; but they are excellent representatives of the mindless morons and propagandized sheep on neo-nazi right. Coulter’s hate speech is mother’s milk for them.
Unfortunately, dumb and dumber are not alone. Fortunately, neither are you.
