They wrote something…

Well, I wrote a couple of days ago about the obvious difference in value the RNC and DNC placed on Memorial Day. Well, today I decided to give them a second chance. I decided to see if the DNC would wake up and smell the flag and see that they had sort of underdone their tribute to our fallen soldiers.

I figured maybe… Just maybe… The fact that they didn’t have something of any real substance on their site as of Saturday wasn’t too bad because today was the actual holiday.

I figured the other 1/2 of the political spectrum in this country, and the party who loves to claim they’re all for the common man would post something noticeable about Memorial Day, a holiday celebrating the service and sacrifice of many common men in combat.

Of course, if any of that happened, I would have to quit my blogging ’cause were in bizarro world.

Notice where the Memorial Day mention is. On an 1152 x 864 screen (my native desktop resolution) and with no extra toolbars installed in Firefox, that appears below the first screen. In other words, you have to scroll to get to it. Past the barking about Delay, Judges, and so on. In fact, as you’ll notice, the DNC site proper has NO mention of Memorial day, and instead relegates it to their blog, while the Delay story is front and center along with the judge story.

Now, I’m not saying an insincere grab of the proverbial cajones is really what is desired here. However, an indication from the DNC that they value the military somewhat would’ve been nice. Instead, they get relegated to screen two even on a day that’s meant to honor them.

It’s nice to see that only the chairman has changed over there, but the politics and disdain have not.

Just goes to show where their priorities are, nyet?

or could it be that the IT people had off over the weekend and no changes were made?

vinny doing what a good GOp supporter is to do – when there isn’t anything to piss and whine about, fuck it, just make some shit up!

  • http://www.insignificantthoughts.com Vinny

Yeah. Heaven knows they wouldn’t wanna put something like that up on the Friday before the weekend. Wouldn’t want anything pro military to be there longer than possible. Face it dude. They ignored Memorial Day except for some posts that didn’t make it “above the fold” on their blog.

You’re doing what any good apologist would do; justify at all costs and never admit that there’s something wrong.

It’s great to have you here, Sirrios. You always add so much to the conversation!

Funny, Sirrios, even with my low-grade, freeware blogging software, I can make a post in the future, and have it show up at the appropriate time. Something tells me that whatever system the Democrats use for their webpage could be capable of that as well… ColdFusion is a wonderful thing these days (assuming they use it).

Or, they could do as Vinny said, and simply put up their Memorial Day message on Friday, take it down on Tuesday, and be done with it. But, no, nothing. Not an obvious message. Not a word of thanks. Not a public announcement. Jack didly, besides some stupid post on their blog. *twirls a finger* Whoop-de-blinking-do.

There is absolutely nothing needed to make up in this situation – the Democrats fucked up, and successfully shot themselves in their collective feet, as they are so often wont to do. Vinny is doing nothing more than calling them on their defficiencies, whcih are many.

I do not care if they agree with our current military decisions, but the fact is that the hundreds of thousands of individuals who have died in the service, protection, and defense of our nation deserve at least an obvious measure of thanks. The Democracts failed (again, as they are so often wont to do).

I’d like to point out that Memorial Day isn’t exactly observed across all of the US. It is primarily a Northern holiday.

  • http://www.insignificantthoughts.com Vinny

It’s still a federal holiday honoring our fallen soldiers, Northern and Southern, and should at least be recognized by a party that represents roughly half the population.

  • Barefoot Paul

I’m glad you appreciate all the flag waving. Personally, I’d be more impressed if the RNC would put their money where their collective mouths are. Perhaps then our troops would have adequate body and Humvee armor. Perhaps then they’d get the veteran’s benefits they were promised when they return home. Perhaps then they’d earn a living wage that could support their families. Perhaps then there wouldn’t be a recruitment problem necessitating a “back door draft” that keeps them away from home.

And this doesn’t even consider the lies that put the troops into Iraq in the first place or the gross bungling of the war by the civilian authorities in the Bush Admin that’s stretching it out far longer than it ever should have been.

If the Dems had any cojones they’d pounce on the RNC flag waving as a demonstration of the hypocricy of claiming to support the troops while their actions do the exact opposite.

  • http://www.linoge.net/weblog/ Linoge

Yes, because we all know that all of those shortcomings and problems are entirely the fault of the Republican party… The Democrats were always behind the soldiers of America, and knew the sitaution in Iraq was screwed months before we got there.

    ….

I’m sorry, but I’ve seen no Democrat initiative to armor the troops, either. There are 45 of them. Are they there?

There is no “backdoor draft.” The soldiers that are being recalled are being recalled because they never fulfilled their entire obligations but were let out because they weren’t needed. However, you are absolutely right about veteran’s benefits. Of course, that was a problem in 1973, so I doubt you can blame it all on Bush, without blaming it on Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush, and Clinton as well.

And this doesn’t even consider the lies that put the troops into Iraq in the first place or the gross bungling of the war by the civilian authorities in the Bush Admin that’s stretching it out far longer than it ever should have been.

Which lies were those? The ones that Hans Blix told about millions of tons of chemical weapons being “unaccounted for?” Or when Hans Blix told the UN that Saddam was not cooperating? Not sure. I guess Blix (R. UN) was in Bush’s pocket along with the vast majority of Democrats who voted for the war, including John Kerry who was on the intelligence committee at the time.

If the Dems had any cojones they’d pounce on the RNC flag waving as a demonstration of the hypocricy of claiming to support the troops while their actions do the exact opposite.

But they can’t because, as far as I know, they’ve done nothing in the last 15 years that even comes close to “supporting” troops, and most troops know where their bread is buttered, explaining the 66% of them that voted Republican in the 2004 election.

Democrats could easily make the Republicans look bad when it comes to the troops. All it would take is the introduction of a bill of support. Alas, they couldn’t even vote for a resolution last year that supported the troops, so why should they start now?

I’m sorry, but I’ve seen no Democrat initiative to armor the troops, either. There are 45 of them. Are they there?

I have to agree with you here. Dems definitely haven’t done enough for our veterans except to complain about how they’re being shortchanged by the GOP. Still doesn’t excuse the fact that their complaints are justified though.

See http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/11/07/national/main654111.shtml for one of many articles on the very real “backdoor draft”. Extended enlistments are only part of the problem. Extended tours in Iraq are even worse. Those of us who served in a foreign war can verify that our short timers’ calendars were an almost sacred document. I can’t imagine what it must be like to not know whether you’ll be coming home when it gets filled in. I agree that there have been veteran’s benefit problems in the past but that doesn’t excuse the cuts that are making them much worse now, especially at a time when they’re needed worse than ever.

If you really want an answer to your question, you can look up the Downing Street Memo, just the latest revelation of how we were lied to. Those who voted for the war were lied to as well. They should’ve been more skeptical, but it’s more understandable in the context of the heightened state of patriotism following 9/11 that made us all much more accepting of false claims of “no doubt” that Iraq’s weapons posed an imminent threat.

But they can’t because, as far as I know, they’ve done nothing in the last 15 years that even comes close to “supporting” troops, and most troops know where their bread is buttered, explaining the 66% of them that voted Republican in the 2004 election.
