Harsh Words

“[They] handled 9/11 like it was a debate over a highway bill instead of a matter of people’s lives. People wanted leadership and they didn’t get it from the Democrats.”

Wow. Harsh words. That Rove’s a real lying bastard. No wonder the Democrats are offended.

EXCEPT…

That wasn’t a Republican strategist / Chief of Staff. It was Andrew Cuomo, one of the most liberal Democrats on the planet, and he said it in a book released October 14, 2003.

Now what makes this funny aren’t the comments themselves; in fact it’s pretty “run-of-the-mill” stuff. What’s truly funny is that the outrage over Rove’s statements is demonstrably now based upon a desire to destroy Rove rather than an outrage over his comments (see the hundreds of Democrats rushing to a microphone near you to ask for his resignation.

Meanwhile Dick “Soldiers are Nazis and Communists” Durbin, Hillary “Gandhi owns a Gas Station” Clinton, Robert “White Niggers” Byrd, and Howard “Republicans have never worked an honest day in their lives” Dean are all still employed by the party.

Glass houses are particularly dangerous to those throwing stones.

Thanks to Slantpoint for the EXCELLENT quote find.

They are outraged because they don’t like what was pointed out to them. Daschles remarks following 9/11, still make me shake my head.

Huh? Should I know who this guy is? His book is ranked, what, six hundred thousandth on Amazon’s list? I mean, seriously. That collection of essays has been published for three years, and not ONE customer review?

Karl Rove was standing three feet away from Bush on September 11th, and is perhaps the single most influential advisor to the President.

And if I can read the out-of-context quote given above correctly, he’s talking about Democratic LEADERSHIP, or the lack thereof. Even if Cuomo was remotely as influential as Rove (which he’s clearly not), “People wanted leadership and they didn’t get it from the Democrats” is not at all the same as saying that “liberals saw the savagery of the 9/11 attacks and wanted to prepare indictments and offer therapy and understanding for our attackers.”

The former says that Democrats — elected officials, mind you — did not provide leadership after 9/11.

Rove says that LIBERALS — which is pretty much 60,000,000 people, if you count just the votes for Kerry — wanted to “offer therapy and understanding for our attackers.” I sat through the funeral of a college friend who had worked at Cantor Fitzgerald, trying my best not to imagine what it must have been like for her, trapped on the 104th floor, and I can absolutely guarantee you that not a single person in that packed chapel at my extremely liberal college (Paul Wellstone was a poli-sci prof during our time there) wanted to offer any kind of understanding for the fuckers who’d cut short the life of our friend.

It is an absolute LIE for him to state otherwise. Period.

    Dude…

Anyone living in NY, NJ, or CT knows Andrew Cuomo as does anyone who ever heard of his dad, Mario.

  • http://www.robertkbrown.com/ RKB

Point is that he’s clearly not as influential as Rove. If JoeBob Buttwipe says “liberals kill babies while conservatives kill terrorists,” nobody’s gonna pay him any attention. But you’re not going to find more than a handful of people with more power in the Republican party than Karl Rove. It’s silly to pretend otherwise. So when he says that liberals are pansy terrorist-lovers while conservatives have the balls for action that those pansy liberals wish they had, well, it’s just a little more offensive.

I paraphrase, of course. And I did think Mario when I heard the name, but didn’t know he had a son. Learn something new every day.

    Oh really?

Kind of like the #2 person in the Senate saying our soldiers are Nazis and communists?

Or maybe the chairman of the other party saying that Republicans have never worked a day in our lives?

Or saying we’re all cookie cutter white christians?

Or that we’re evil, for crying out loud?

Or maybe that we’re all crooked bastards?

Rove said what he felt, and considering the fact that with the exception of some polls ten days afterward, and some resolutions that have become talking points for the Democrats when talking AGAINST the two wars we’re involved in, I’d say he wasn’t far off.

  • http://www.insignificantthoughts.com Vinny

You know what? Let me put it another way.

    Consider the war on terrorism.

What specifically have Democrats done to help fight it?

    Specifically.

And let’s not count resolutions that were introduced by Republicans, or resolutions that have been disavowed since being passed (for example, the Patriot Act).

    The floor is yours.

you left out Patty “Osama builds schools, the U.S. destroys countries” Murray…

this outrage is just a sad attempt at distracting Americans from the fact that the Democratic party has not had an idea in at least 15 years. No strategies, no ideas, no vision. So instead they just bitch and moan. Thankfully, I don’t see Rove stepping down any time soon. Unlike other (R)’s, he has a spine.

Vinny, my answer to your question:

What specifically have Democrats done to help fight it?

Liberals have been preparing indictments and offering therapy and understanding to those who participate in terrorist activities. Can’t think of much else they’ve been doing, considering many of them are so against beating the shit out of them….

  • http://seek-truth.com Chet

Wait. The Dems DID propose to reinstate the Draft, right? That would help!

    Right?

  • http://www.robertkbrown.com/ RKB

Vinny — and there was outrage from the right when Durbin and Dean made his statements, and there were calls for their resignations, too. I’m not defending what they said. If the right is able to be vocally offended by the statements you describe, why can’t the left be vocally offended by Rove?

To answer your question about what specifically have Democrats done to fight the war on terror, I’d say, first, that unless you think only conservatives make up our armed forces than there are many thousands of liberals currently fighting and dying in Iraq and Afghanistan.

What have Dems in Washington done? I dunno. They don’t control all three branches of government, so it’s kind of hard to look to them for leadership, I guess.

    That’s a weak argument, dude.

What have Dems in Washington done? I dunno. They don’t control all three branches of government, so it’s kind of hard to look to them for leadership, I guess.

And that’s even weaker. They don’t control all three branches?

    Hmmmm…

The Supremes seem to be leaning liberal these days, and I don’t remember an easy time ramrodding court nominees through the Congress…

If by control you mean more people, well, that’s possible. If you mean ability to actually command the issues and the agenda, different animal altogether.
