I get the impression…

I get the impression that certain people are waiting with baited breath for an attack of the London sort to happen here so they can say:

1. “See? The war in Iraq did nothing to make us safer.”

2. “See? It’s all Bush’s fault.”

If a London-style attack happens here, it would be interesting to see the range of reactions. I have a funny feeling there will be a lot less blame placed on the people who do it than the President.

You know… Like the attacks in London?

I guess we’ll have to just wait and see.

I pray to God there isn’t an attack, but I must agree with you. Remember last summer when they upped the terror alert in NYC and everyone bitched?

There’s always someone waiting for everything. Personally, I’m waiting for the world to end so we can finally put this whole Jesus-was-the-Messiah rumor to rest.

But to terrorism — our London-style attack already happened –April 19, 1995. 168 Americans murdered by home-grown terrorists.

We will undoubtedly be subject to terrorist attacks from Islamic crazies, but we will also be subject to terrorist attacks from right wing extremists like McVeigh again in the future, as well as from more Christian extremists like Eric Rudolph.

And Iraq will not have made us safer. But that’s not why we entered Iraq. Bush entered Iraq for the most liberal of reasons — to promote democracy and freedom across the region, something that I think we should be willing to suffer for, because I, like Bush, am a true bleeding heart in that regard. I think he’s a terrible president and a liar and evil man in many areas, but at least as far as his reasons for going to war in Iraq, I know that he’s seriously idealistic about spreading freedom and democracy.

You are spot on. Sadly, I have a feeling there will be an attack–sooner rather than later. There was a former Mossad agent on talk radio this morning and he said as much. Apparently he now works in NYC on counter-terrorism efforts and he said that there was credible, but not specific intelligence that there would be an attack this summer in Europe (with hints that it would be Great Britain) and in the same reports the US was also said to expect a “hot summer.” Well we know the London attacks have happened, so now we have to wonder if–as he claims–there will indeed be an attack within the next 90 days.

He went on to say that it won’t be an airliner for a long long time (if ever again) and not because of all the countless billions we’ve spent fortifying cockpit doors and x-ray check-points. He says they won’t do it because they KNOW that we the public will fight back so hard they stand little chance of hitting their targets, and might even be (God forbid) captured ALIVE (egads).

What this tells me is that terrorists are more afraid of you and me and our ALERT fellow citizens than they are of any fancy counter-terrorism measures we might have. This expert agrees. He says we are our own best defense. He says until explosive “sniffing” technology can be developed and installed at every entry-point to public transportation (every station, every bus, every train, etc…)–which is years off–we have to put thousands of eyes on these guys every time we ride public transportation. They ALL go on scouting/recon. missions, and apparently, i’ts not that hard to spot someone who’s doing exactly that. He said if WE engaged in profiling (which is not illegal and he feels should be encouraged more) and WE report anyone or anything suspicious, we just might save ourselves from many (but likely not all) attacks.

He also said to carry a small dish towel, a bottle of water and a flashlight at ALL times when we are out and about in a city. He said these items could–if you survive the initial blast–save your life in a dark tunnel or collapsed building.

It’s not a matter of if, but when. The terrorists are already here too. If I have any gripe with Bush it’s that his “we have to fight them there so we don’t fight them here” speech is really going to sink him. If we learned anything from London it’s that these guys can easily be home grown, especially since we STILL refused to racially/religiously profile and refuse to toughen (never mind extend) the Patriot Act. When they hit us, doubtless they will either be US born and rasied, or those who’ve snuck over our borders. Either way, I hate to say it, it WILL be partly Bush’s fault, but not for the reasons the libtards will give (i.e., not because we are in Iraq or are mean to Gitmo detainees).

A future attack is virtually unavoidable.

We should be doing everything we can to prevent a terrorist attack. We should also be initiating legislation and building programs, alert systems, etc. that would help mitigate the damage of a future attack.

Our response to such an attack should be the best way to guage this administration’s effectiveness in combating terrorism. Hopefully Bush Co. has learned that invading and occupying a country that maintained no significant threat and was never connected to the actual attacker is not the best way to answer this enemy…

I guess we’ll have to wait until the next attack to see who’s REALLY winning THE WAR ON TERROR -(sound the dark and militant trumpets)
