My Days of Windows Are Nearly Over

Posted at 8:24 am under Cool

Apple Computer Inc. is on track to ship Intel-based computers as targeted by June 2006, Chief Executive Steve Jobs said on Tuesday.

“We are on track to do that,” Jobs told a news conference in Paris, referring to the plan the company announced in June this year.

I cannot wait. Cannot wait at all. Getting rid of my iBook was the worst decision I ever made.

I’m waiting to see what they come out with. My plans to install Linux are on hold because the video editing projects have eaten up available hard drive space. I’d like to ditch Windows, but re-training my family would be too much trouble. I’ll just go with a dual-boot system, though.

Nothing against Apple, but I’ll bet it’s gonna be expensive. They proved me wrong with the mini, though.

Any word on whether there will be ways to run wintel-based programs on the MacTel systems? Emulation should be easier, since they underlying instruction set is now the same.

Don’t bet on it. In fact, the general consensus is that because of Intel’s production capacity, the exact opposite might happen. Truth is, Apple did this to get their hands on an abundance of lower power Pentium M style chips, and higher end Pentium chips, both of which should drive down the price of OS X systems dramatically.

As far as I know, they haven’t fully worked out Rosetta yet (Rosetta being the translation layer that will allow older PowerPC apps to run on the Intel machines), and I’m sure the minute they get that going, we’ll start seeing Intel Macs almost immediately.

Again, I can’t wait. The Mac is the best system on the planet, and the quicker I can finally ditch Windows (I refuse to buy one of the seven skus of Vista), the happier and saner I’ll be.
