Another Case of Imagine if Whitey Said It

Posted at 8:51 pm under Media Morons

There really is nothing better than being lectured on racism by an altruistic representative of the community like Bryant Gumbel. In a tirade about the winter Olympics, we were informed that we should try not to laugh when someone tells us that those competitors are not the greatest athletes in the world, particularly when there are so few black people there.

Actually, I’m not kidding. Lest you think that I’m just being an exaggerating smartass, here, via Expose the Left, is the video.

The inherent ignorance of his remarks notwithstanding, there is a need to dissect this sort of stupidity as soon as it presents itself.

The crux of his point is that these can’t be the greatest athletes in the world because there are no black athletes there. Not being one to engage in stereotypes, one would have to wonder if there were a few black people on the team if Gumbel would be as bored with the winter olympics. This of course would require the assumption to be accepted as fact that there are no black people on the team, which I don’t know for a fact.

Aside from the obvious racism in Gumbel’s remarks, and the hypocrisy of him (being the whitest black man I can think of) speaking with any authority on issues facing black americans, it’s terribly interesting that to choose a group that historically has neglected blacks, he chose the GOP.

Considering Condi Rice and Collin Powell were both Secretary of State, and both of them Republicans, I find it ironic. They achieved the highest political office ever achieved by a black person, and did so under a Republican President.

Gumbel’s own industry, however, is almost utterly devoid of black people. The sports talkshow host “industry” is almost completely lilly-white. In fact the talkshow host business is almost entirely white (with the exception of Montel Williams). For Gumbel to choose the GOP to demonstrate a white organization is ludicrous, and unnecessarily vindictive.

It’s okay, though, because in the end I don’t know any black people who look up to Bryant Gumbel.

Most of them are quite happy being black.
