Most modern hard drives have something built in called S.M.A.R.T., which stands for Self Monitoring and Reporting Technology. With a certain degree of accuracy, it can predict failure in drives based on diagnostics. Panterasoft has a great little piece of software that reads the S.M.A.R.T. data right off the drive, and gives you a great level of detail you otherwise may not have been able to get.
