In other courtroom news, TWU Local 100 which conducted an illegal strike the week before Christmas in 2005, was slammed by a Brooklyn judge for the illegal strike, and will suffer severe penalties.
A judge fined Transport Workers Union Local 100 $2.5 million Monday for its illegal transit strike in December, and suspend[sic] the organization’s ability to deduct union dues directly from members’ checks indefinitely.
Judge Theodore Jones issued the ruling in state Supreme Court in Brooklyn over the objection of union attorneys who argued the penalty will cripple the union financially and could even force it out of business.
“This is a very unfortunate event and an unfortunate day in the history of labor relations of this city,” said Judge Jones.
TWU Local 100 President Roger Toussaint is vowing to appeal.
“Two and a half million is excessive,” said Toussaint. “It is excessive, it is too much, and it’s one-sided. We don’t think that the judge should have gone that far.”
One-sided? You arrogant bastard.
One-sided like hurting the millions of workers who had no way to get to work for 3 days?
One-sided like crippling the businesses who rely on Christmas to feed their families?
Guess TWU Local 100 is now doomed. No more automatic dues collection? Deal breaker for a union (especially considering unions exist primarily for their own existence).
Look back, Roger. Was the strike really worth it? Your union is effectively broken, you’re going to jail, and you’re probably going to end up with the exact contract the MTA offered the last trip to the bargaining table.
Way to go!
