Six Apart Adopts Crappy Policy
Six Apart property Live Journal recently updated its Terms of Service and in it included the following in the “You won’t use it this way” section
17. Employ tactics and/or technologies to prevent the full and complete delivery or display of advertisements on LiveJournal pages. These include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Making journal style changes, customizations, or overrides that effectively block or substantially impair the display of advertisements on a Sponsored+ account’s Content or other pages within the Service.
2. Employing and/or providing software programs, browser scripts, or other technologies that serve to block or substantially impair the display of advertisements on LiveJournal pages.
So if you browse Livejournal with a popup blocker on, you could end up getting shitcanned. Isn’t that special? I certainly think so. Yet another reason to steer clear of Six Apart like the bird flu.

I’m not sure you’re particularly interested in being fair about this, but that part of the TOS has been updated because we screwed up there. Brad’s posted about this, but I’m curious if you have any rational reasons that you think Six Apart should be avoided. I’m always open to legitimate feedback, and I think you’d be surprised to find how we’re not actually a bunch of evil cretins, but just regular folks trying to help people have blogs.

Why aren’t you sure, Anil? Because I’m not a fanboy who worships the ground that Ben and Mena walk on?
I think Six Apart should be avoided like the plague because they’re a company that puts a warm fuzzy face on but are just as cutthroat as any other company.
The fact is your free offering, Livejournal, should be ad free just like Blogger if your main interest is “helping people have blogs.”
It always seems like Six Apart makes these outrageous and counterproductive moves, only to correct them and pat themselves on the back for doing so. This is one. The initial pricing of the paid Moveable Type would count as another.
I’m not sure you’re interested in constructive feedback, but you already have Typepad and MoveableType. Maybe you should leave LiveJournal alone and stop sucking up companies like LiveJournal so you can turn them into a profit if your sole interest is “helping people have blogs.”
I don’t think you’re all cretins. I don’t think you’re all evil. I also don’t buy the warm fuzzy mom and pop crap you guys have been throwing out since I first used MoveableType, the same phoniness that reached its pinnacle as I moved on to WordPress.

Exposing LJ Abuse
LJ ads and Six Apart
There were many skeptical voices when Six Apart took over LiveJournal in 2005. A lot of their fears have proved accurate. How many times did LJ say they stood firm in telling their users they “promise to never offer advertising space in our service o…
