Arrogance? Ignorance? Both? Neither?

Via Yahoo! News:

Former “American Idol” contestant Chris Daughtry said Saturday he has turned down an offer to be lead singer for the band Fuel.

Daughtry, in Greensboro for a day of welcome-home appearances, said he expects to announce his next career move in few months, probably after he finishes with an “American Idol” summer concert tour.

“I’m going to be doing my own thing,” Daughtry told The Charlotte Observer.

The band offered Daughtry a job hours after viewers voted him off the Fox television talent show last month. Bass player Jeff Abercrombie and guitarist Carl Bell made their pitch on the TV show “Extra.”

He would have replaced Brett Scallions, who quit the multi-platinum rock band in February.

I have to wonder what Chris thinks he’s going to do on his own? Was the prospect of joining a multi platinum rock band so bad? Was becoming a member of a band instead of a solo artist that unattractive?

When Chris originally told the band he had to “think about it,” Beth immediately called it. She said he was too self-absorbed to ever take a gig as part of a band, especially when he wouldn’t be mentioned by name. I figured he was just trying to figure out what he could do legally.

Looks more like Beth was right.

Maybe not having his own name on his album was a bit too much for him. After all, we’re talking about guaranteed success versus the short-lived success usually afforded most Idols that tends to end when the afterglow of Idol is over.

I wish Chris the best. I honestly liked him. I love that kind of music (Nickelback / Fuel style), and I will buy his solo album.

The question is, did he let his ego keep him from going with a sure thing?

Time will tell.

Personally, if it were me, I would probably want to go solo as well. I wouldn’t want to join a band that I may not share interests, directions, or beliefs with. With so many bands breaking up or fueding, I would be hesitant to add to the fire, so to speak.

Chris worked hard to get a deal as a solo artist and I don’t think it’s wrong for him to continue to work toward that goal. And I would definitely be first in line for his first release. After he was voted off, I refused to watch the rest of the show. Chris was the only good thing this year.

The difference is between having a future and being a flash in the pan.

No biggie. He’ll be back servin’ up auto parts in no time.

Either way, at least we were graced with hearing his voice for a little while. I do sincerely wish him the best. :) He’s a Carolina boy – there’s no telling what’s in store for him! ;)

My suspicion is that he is bound by contract to Idol, and their offer is not a wait until next year when I’m free kinda offer. However, he can’t really say that so he says he is “pursuing other interests.”

Idol’s commitment to non-winning top 10 performers is only through the summer. The winner (Taylor in this case) gets 1 year and 1 album.

It’s not as restrictive as I thought originally.

Yes, but I am sure that it includes provisions about accepting other deals or making career announcements other than Idol. I doubt he can commit to anything, even verbally, until after the contract expires.
