How to Kill A Computer in 18 Days

Posted at 8:02 am under Geeky

How do you kill a computer in 18 days? Steve Knopper of Wired takes a stab at it and reports rousing success in riddling a computer with spyware and viruses. Well done Steve! You’ve now intentionally reached the level of most of the employees in my company do accidentally!

What kind of idiot buys a computer and willingly – even eagerly – exposes it to all the malware and viruses he can? Me. I bought a Dell Dimension B110 ($468! Cheap!) and tried to kill it for more than two weeks. I clicked on every pop-up and downloaded the gnarliest porn, gambling, and hacker files I could find. It seems our Internet overlords are sterilizing spam. If I were to treat my body the way I treated this computer, I’d have yellow fever, bird flu, and Alzheimer’s. But the Dell? Eh. Somewhat the worse for wear.

You are a great man! All my friends think what you did is wonderful. More power to you. I do tech support and have had to deal with AOL putting its tenticles into the operating system. Never had an account though. Always saw AOL as trying to be the entire internet to their subscribers - AOL keyword! Trying to keep them on their site and not on the internet as such. Hope you make some money on this or in some way are richly rewarded. You made my day! Thanks.
