Back in the Day when there was a Draft, and soldiers were selected from the general population without their consent, individual soldiers had valid moral and other arguments against fighting a particular conflict (such as Vietnam).

However, today the Armed Forces are completely volunteer. No one forces you to sign up, and there is no clause that says I sign up only IF I agree with the current conflict, or agree with where I am being sent, etc.

Unfortunately, too many people see the Armed Forces as just another job they can quit whenever they want, or as a way to get their education paid for.

I have no sympathy for this individual or anyone else who joins the Armed Forces and then decides they only want to serve on their own terms and in the conflict of their choosing.

If you don't want to be a soldier, and don't want to fight, then don't enlist. Period.

Ok, so I can understand those men and women who signed up when they thought there was a serious threat (WMD) over there not wanting to go. But what about the men/women that signed up AFTER it all came out that there wasn't.

Shouldn't they be held accountable for the commitment they made? They knew when they signed on the dotted line that they would probably be sent, they also knew that there was no huge threat (WMD) yet some signed up anyway - maybe this was the case of this one "gentleman" (I use the term loosely).

If it is the case, then shouldn't he be made to stand up for what he agreed upon? He made the adult decision to go ahead and enlist, shouldn't he be held accountable for it?

It's all about accountability, you knowingly join or sign up or make an effort to participate in something as important as war, you should not have the option of backing out. To me, it's just as bad as the guys that enlist then when they get called to fly over - run off to Canada.

As for agreeing with the war or not, that's not the subject of debate here and really has no reason being brought up. Whether those of us posting that the guy IS a wuss actually agree with the war is an invalid point and bears no weight on the discussion. If you're going to bring up side-topics make sure they actually relate to what it is being talked about; otherwise you run the risk of getting both feet stuck in your mouth.

Oh, and the whole "make a commitment" thing, I'm glad to see that you know every intimate detail of my life that you would make the assumption that I have never made an important commitment and therefore have no right to be offering my opinion on this subject. Until you know for sure what kind of commitments I have made and whether or not I have been honorable in keeping them - kindly shut up.

Please. When the war started, everyone was under the assumption we were going over there because Saddam was ready to drop WMD's. When the truth came out, that he didnt have any, the reason we were there took a whole different turn. Shit, most of the people posting this rubbish here also probably dont agree with the war anyway. Honor his commitment? F you. Why dont you MAKE a commitment before talking trash.

Saw this last week, can't quite get myself to watch the whole thing. But, either way I still agree. He signed up, he should honor his commitment instead of being a wuss and tucking tail. Be a man, suck it up and tough it out. Then make a mental note not to do something like that (sign up for something as important as war) without going through some serious soul-searching.

Then again, if you believe all soldiers are automatically killers, you're not much better either.

You suffer through it because you made the decision to become a soldier in the first place.

This guy wasn't a killer anyway. He was trying to get out of going to Afghanistan in the first place. It wasn't that he "didn't want to be a killer anymore," it's that he didn't want to be a soldier, despite signing up for it.

No sympathy.

so if you change your mind. and you don't like being a killer anymore. then what?
