Quality Titles? Nah…

Normally I’m right in there with Forever Geek. I find myself nodding often when reading the stories they post.

This is not one of those times.

While Griffith does concede that the DS is the winner of the portable console wars, he makes this statement which does not make one lick of sense to me:

One thing is certain, competition in any market is always good. Every Nintendo fan flamed the little black (or white) console when it first showed up, claiming it’s battery was very poor, but even with that flaw, it managed to stay afloat and still continue placing quality titles on the shelves every month.

Where?

I happen to be a hoarder of magazines. In March 2006′s PSM (PlayStation Magazine for the unwashed), they had a PSP report card. There were three subjects that were game-related and here are the grades.

Quality and Quantity: C-
Originality: D-
Upcoming Releases: B

Wow. Rousing, isn’t it?

I think the most telling part comes in the Quality and Quantity section:

There are good games for the PSP. As this little snip says, most of them came out at launch. There is a definite lack (in both quantity and quality) of PSP games. Once the hype died down from the launch, lots of my friends who jumped on that bandwagon jumped right off and got a Nintendo DS.

Sony blew it with the PSP. Unfortunately for the people who own it, it’s a bit too late to fix all that now.

I bought a PSP a few weeks ago – splurged since I got rid of a ridiculously high rent for a smaller place. I’m also a Tomb Raider fan, been playing the games since.. well they came out so of course I bought “Legend” with it. To be frank, I’m pleased with the PSP. It does exactly what I want it to do and so far hasn’t caused many problems.

As far as games are concerned, I’m really not concerned on getting a whole shelf full of them – I expect to buy a few more and be satisfied. The PSP is really there as a stimulant during breaks at work or when my laptop is on the fritz (stupid thing) as well as on the bus rides to see my family.

I guess the thought of Sony flopping with the PSP is subjective to what type of consumer you’re talking to. For one such as myself who really doesn’t care about a huge influx of new games the PSP isn’t that bad of a hand-held. Remember – could always be worse. We could go back to the old clunky Gameboys WITHOUT color *shock*.
