Oh yay. The American right has found its new cause celebre. I’m so happy.
This time, the outrage-o-meter is pinned over a planned television documentary on Channel 4 in the UK that depicts the assassination of President Bush. My big answer to that… Who cares? Well apparently every right-wing blogger because the story is just sickeningly prevalent in the blogosphere right now because God knows there’s nothing more important going on in the world at the moment.
Here’s a quick bit on the flick:
The dramatic scene, which has caused outrage among Americans, has been created by a British film company for a programme about the effect of the War On Terror.
In Death Of A President, which will premiere at the Toronto Film Festival later this month (SEPT)before being shown on Channel 4’s satellite channel More4 in October, the assassination is a starting point for a retrospective fictional documentary about what happened next.
This scene, which was created by putting the President’s face onto an actor with digital wizardry, shows him being gunned down just hours after driving past an anti-war demonstration while doing a talk in Chicago.
The two hour drama, in which events are ‘re-created’ by the use of footage and interviews, shows the media storm around the War on Terror as Muslims are fingered as the culprits before there is any evidence.
In the wake of the assassination, authorities focus on a Syrian-born man in the search for the culprit.
‘In the hunt for the killer, this will show how America has been affected by the War on Terror,’ said a spokesman. ‘It is about the polarisation of America in all the events post 9/11.’
Would I see it? Probably simply out of curiosity, but not out of some morbid desire to see the movie.
What annoys me, though, is the outrage. People, it’s a movie. Just like every other movie. Focus your outrage on more important issues rather than what some television documentary is saying about your blessed hero. It’s not really that important. Hell, at least see the stupid thing before you judge it. There’s at least one part that warrants some thought, and that’s the fingering of muslims before there is evidence.
A simple question. If the President were assassinated tomorrow, can you honestly say muslims wouldn’t be the first suspects? Hell, look what happened with Oklahoma City. It ended up being a pair of white guys, but muslims were the first suspects. For most people, the shock was more that it was white guys than what they actually did!
Chill out people. Watch the movie. Or don’t. Just shut up about it either way.
