Wow… Such a rebel!

I love stories like this. MacDailyNews posted one from the New York Times about some chick from the Bronx who’s a die-hard “contrarian” according to herself.

IMAN HAYWARD is an 18-year-old college student and self-confessed contrarian. She likes to mix Cyberdog T-shirts with platform boots. She prefers vintage horror movies to modern remakes. And she does not like the Apple iPod.

“I was kind of anti-iPod because everybody had it,” said Ms. Hayward, who lives in the Bronx.

That is not to say she dislikes portable music players. In fact, on Nov. 14 she will wait in line, if needed, to be among the first to own Microsoft’s iPod alternative, the Zune — in the fudge-brown case, no less. “I’m going to be waving it in front of my friends’ faces,” she said. “They all have iPods.”

Iman owns a Windows laptop, just like 86% of the laptop-owning population.

Way to rebel.

MacDailyNews also notes a similar article from October 5th written by the same guy:

“When Max Roosevelt wanted to rebel, he got a Dell laptop and a SanDisk Sansa MP3 player. It was not a rebellion against his parents, who had been buying Dells for years. It was a rebellion against his peers, Mac-toting iPod addicts one and all,” Wilson Rothman reports for The New York Times.

“’I just didn’t want to have the same MP3 player as everybody else, and felt that there had to be equivalent or better players out there,’ Mr. Roosevelt, an 18-year-old native of Chappaqua, N.Y., said recently from his freshman dorm room at the University of Maryland. ‘It’s not that I don’t like it; I just don’t like the whole cult mentality towards Apple. I don’t like how everyone gravitates toward it immediately,’” Rothman reports.

He rebelled by buying a Dell Laptop; a company that probably accounts for 40-50% of the portable marketshare.

I think I’m going to rebel later. As I work on my second novel, I’m going to eat McDonald’s. I’ll show these people how to non-conform.

Hmmmmm. Smells like a Microsoft-planted (or at least encouraged) article. "Rebel against the rebellion".

    I smell me some fish....

And does she think it's rebellious to prefer old horror films to modern remakes? NO ONE goes to see the remakes (they bomb in flames EVERY time) and so many people are snatching up DVDs of classic horror that the studios are falling over themselves to print multiple editions of the same film.
She's so busy being an "independent" in everything she does, she hasn't looked up to see the herd around her.

I know you're all pro-Apple, Vinny. I worked with Macs for 13+ years when I was in IT at Condé Nast, and saw them grow and evolve.

    Know what?

    I prefer Windows.

Apple's smarmy, we're-hipper-than-thou advertising, coupled with the obnoxiousness of its own support people turned me off to them years ago. And the preachy nature of their followers (wink) always irritated me.

I prefer my Archos MP3 player to an iPod, cos I don't need to freakin' use iTunes to load stuff. It's windows-compliant, USB-ready.

I prefer my nice Dell desktop, cos it allows me to do things like play the games I want to play. The Mac is marginalized, and forever will be.

Smarmy we're hipper than thou and obnoxiousness of support people?

Have you seen a Microsoft ad lately? Have you called them for tech support? How about Dell's tech support? I know for a fact what shit they are. No preaching here, my friend.

As for your Archos... You don't have to use iTunes. Wow. Okay. Wonderful. I for one don't like carrying a brick in my pocket, but to each his own. Archos makes some nice devices, but you need deep pockets both to buy 'em and carry 'em.

And playing games on computers? Whatever dude. I have three consoles for that. As for marginalized, 14% of laptops sold last year were Macs. Not exactly marginal when you consider Toshiba was at around 11%.

Truth is Windows people tend to hate Macs because they're all about "good enough" computing. If that's "good enough" for you, go right ahead. Just beware of viruses, spyware, and buffer overflows.

Mac users use Macs because they like 'em. Windows users use windows because they can't think beyond their start button.

$159 for my extremely small, extremely light Archos 4 gig unit. About the size of a Nano.

Not sure what brick you're talking about Vinny. Could it be you're wrong about this one?

    Nah, never happen.

    As to this comment:

You're reaching. I used Macs extensively for thirteen plus years, or did you miss that part? When it comes to Macs, I know more of what I speak than you do, sir. Been there, done that, still prefer Windows.

You fall into the typical MacGeek mold, denigrating anyone else's computing choice over your own.

Must be nice. Enjoy your Mac. I enjoy my Windows machine.

    And more:

Point the first -- I have an X-Box. I play games designed for the PC, usually.

As to Apple's total market share -- what is it these days, compared to Windows machines? Not that big.

Truth is Windows people tend to hate Macs because they’re all about “good enough” computing. If that’s “good enough” for you, go right ahead. Just beware of viruses, spyware, and buffer overflows.

There you go again with your generalizations and hate. Why do you feel the need to denigrate someone whose computing choices are different than yours? As I said, I am quite proficient with the Mac and have been for a long time. I helped devise what eventually became known as Quark Publishing Systems, or QPS. That was based on my system designs back in the early 90s.

Don't sit there all holier-than-thou on me, dude. My computing choices are made because maybe, just maybe, I know what I'm doing. I have no need for what the Mac brings me. I know how to protect from viruses and spyware. Just wait until you get a Mac virus -- they do exist, you know.

    Gasp!

Oh wow. You're totally right. Market share is a total indicator of quality. Typical PC user argument.

My computing choices are made because maybe, just maybe, I know what I’m doing. I have no need for what the Mac brings me. I know how to protect from viruses and spyware. Just wait until you get a Mac virus — they do exist, you know.

Exactly what I said. You use a PC out of utility not because you like it. It's okay. That's how most PC users are. As for waiting until I get a Mac virus... Dude... You'd might as well wiggle your fingers with your thumbs in your ears. You sound like a six year old on the playground. "You just wait. You'll see. One day."

It's amazing. All PC users are identical. They think that the PC is superior because more people use it, they think the Mac is inferior because it can't play some game you can get on a console, and they think that because they have to run antivirus and antispyware utilities the second they put a computer on the internet they think they're automatic security experts.

I do this crap all day for a living too, bro. The average Windows user isn't smart enough to protect himself. The average windows user isn't even aware that another platform exists, let alone that it might serve them better. You and I both know that accouns for the marketshare Windows has, not some great superiority of Windows.

There you go again with your generalizations and hate. Why do you feel the need to denigrate someone whose computing choices are different than yours? That's wonderful, but it's also irrelevant. I don't care if you're Steve Jobs' right hand man. I never said you didn't know Macs, I said you chose windows more out of utility than happiness with the platform. So far, you've yet to prove any of that wrong.

Oh, and not to break your heart or anything, but your blessed Archos will work with the Mac too, meaning if I wanted to prove what an astonishing free thinker I was (yawn) I could plug it in and copy my music over too (to simplify it for you, I don't "have" to use iTunes either).

Nope, I choose Windows out of happiness with the platform. I truly don't like the Mac.

There are people out there like that, Vinny. :)
