Republican: Scripts need reviewing
Movie prompts lawmaker’s film incentive idea

Raleigh | Citing the controversy surrounding the Dakota Fanning film Hounddog, the leader of the state Senate Republicans says he wants the government to review scripts before cameras start rolling in North Carolina.

That system, said state Sen. Phil Berger, R-Rockingham, would apply only to films seeking the state’s lucrative filmmaker incentive, which refunds as much as 15 percent of what productions spend in North Carolina from the state treasury.

“Why should North Carolina taxpayers pay for something they find objectionable?” said Berger, who is having proposed legislation drafted.

It is not known whether Hounddog’s producers have or will apply for the incentive. A call Thursday to the N.C. Department of Revenue, which oversees incentive payments, was not returned.

First of all I don’t reckon there’s a big demand for filming in North Carolina.

Second of all, I don’t reckon they’re considering how much money the film crews spend while they’re in town (hint… It’s a lot asshole)

Third of all, who’s standards do we use in defining objectionable?

Just screw off.

I hate Republicans like him.

Come to think of it, most Republicans are like him…

Hmmm…

I had the same reaction as you when I first head this story. The headlines do make it sound bad. After reading the story however it turns out to be media making something out of nothing to get more readers.

The Republican is only saying they should see the script in advance if they want to receive a tax incentive from the state. You don't want it you don't have to show your script to anyone. This Republican's suggestion isn't much different than that of the Democrat's bill that passed. In that case the incentive is given only after seeing the film once it is completed. If the Government doesn't approve the finished film, no tax incentive for you! Not a big difference here - either way the government is reviewing films and approving or disapproving them.

Sorry, but if you want free money from the taxpayers you have to accept government regulation. Don't want to deal with it then don't take the money and go do whatever film you want.

And actually, there's rather a lot of filming in North Carolina; it trails only California and New York in revenue generated by film production. (We're talking $300 million a year here.)
