Posting’s gonna be light for a few days…
February 27th, 2007 by VinnyJust wanted to give a quick heads up. Posting is probably going to be light and/or nonexistent this week. I have some stuff I have to take care of and IT gets in the way so for now things will be quiet. It’ll all be back over the weekend though, so fear not!
Thanks for reading,
Vinny

Fear not: They passed their inspection the day before!
February 26th, 2007 by VinnyThey passed their inpsection the day before this was shot.
(CBS) NEW YORK Health officials are going to review the inspection of a Greenwich Village KFC/Taco Bell, which was completed one day before CBS 2 cameras caught dozens of rats scurrying across the store, jumping on tables, and climbing into food trays.
“It doesn’t look like the inspection that was done Thursday met our standards,” said Geoffrey Cowley, a health department spokesman. “I don’t want to prejudge that. We’re concerned and we’re going to carefully revaluate that inspection.”
The restaurant located at Sixth Avenue and West 4th Street was investigated Thursday following complaints, but the inspector didn’t see any rats.
In addition, the same restaurant passed both of its inspections last year, although it was fined $1,300 for some violations which included mice droppings.
Now the Health Department has closed the store, and said it will remain closed until it passes re-inspection.
Which standard did it not meet?
Being done?
Think about it. The place was this overrun with rats… That didn’t happen in one day and they certainly aren’t the kind of rats that just hide when they see people. Although considering how many filthy restaurants “pass” inspection daily, I actually think this might actually meet their “standards.”

Whenever I hear stories like this, I just laugh at US bloggers who think they’re oppressed because someone left a rude comment in their comments section.
Equal Pay for Unequal Work
February 24th, 2007 by VinnyMark today on the calendar. It’s the first time I’ve ever disagreed with Artie MacStrawman!
Here’s what I particularly disagree with. In a post about Women getting paid the same at Wimby as the men, Artie writes the following:
It’s just a pity that it took them so long to get around to doing what should have been done long ago.
Women’s tennis has been exiting to watch for a very long time, and has produced great rivalries and countless classic battles over the years, some more intense than in the men’s game, and it’s about time that they are equally rewarded for their contribution.
Sounds like some touchy feely PC stuff if you ask me.
Men’s tennis is still the big draw. The men’s final is still the biggest event at Wimbledon. It’s just the way it is. Women getting paid equal prize money seems to create an air of equality that isn’t really there. I’m not against them getting paid more, per se, but I would rather they got paid a porportional amount of what they draw.
Secondly, women don’t play the same game the men do. Best 2 out of 3 is not Best 3 out of 5. Mens games are (in general of course) more grueling, go longer, and so on. In other words, if women are to be paid equally, they should have to play equally. No more different standards. Let them play a 3 out of 5 game. Frankly, I think they can handle it. Someone like Venus or Serena Williams is probably in better shape than half the men on the tour anyway.
It doesn’t matter one way or the other to me, to be honest. I just think it’s funny that a lesser draw that plays a shortened game is going to earn the women the same prize money as the men. If they were all drawing equally and playing the same game, I’d probably think differently.
Sorry Artie. I love ya anyway.
This Week’s Podcasts
February 24th, 2007 by VinnyHot off the presses!
Here’s last night’s Information Salad… Slobokan and I seemed to be really on our game last night so this one is particularly good. We also have a special song from my new favorite singer / songwriter, Jonathan Coulton:
And of course, the Saturday Morning Spectacular that is Side Salad:
Enjoy! And as always, comments are welcome!
PS: Due to a glitch with Movable Type, the shows didn’t hit iTunes this morning. Sorry about that. They should be in iTunes at some point today once we work out the hiccups…

Culture of Corruption
February 24th, 2007 by VinnyAnother victim of the Republican culture of corruption…
Wait a minute…
In less than a year and a half, former Brooklyn Assemblyman and Democratic party boss Clarence Norman was found guilty [3 times] on corruption charges. This time, a jury found Norman guilty of five counts of coercion, grand larceny by extortion, and attempted grand larceny by extortion related to, as the Daily News put it, “shaking down court candidate Karen Yellen for $10,000″ back in 2002. Norman’s threat was that she would lose his support if she didn’t use certain campaign consultants. Norman was acquitted of five other similar charges related to extorting another candidate, Marcia Sikowitz.
Grand larceny…
Extortion…
Grand larceny by extortion…
Nice guy, huh?
Anyway, Gothamist has a great breakdown of the most recent conviction and some links so you can catch up on how this Republican Culture of Corruptiontm victim came to be convicted and what he did to get there.

If I hadn’t seen stupidity like this in other areas, I never would’ve believed it here…
The ad featuring the grab above has been banned in Australia. Why?
The ASB argues that the ad shows illegal activity (and there’s nothing else on TV that shows illegal stuff?), and may entice youngsters into copycat behavior. Right. Like nobody in the history of the car ever had a kid yank the controls before this ad suggested it? Kids love to pretend like they’re adults, so you can be sure that if you plop your toddler in the driver’s seat, they’re going to have a grand old time.
*sigh*
Are there really people who think that a kid would watch this ad and say “I’m going for a drive?”
Are we becoming this stupid that we need to have people, as Autoblog says, “protect us from ourselves?”
(Hint: yes!)
Jeez…
PS: They have the whole spot on the site for your viewing pleasure.
Real or Computer Generated?
February 24th, 2007 by VinnyAstonishingly enough, this picture is not a real person; it’s a computer generated composite of an actress done by a rather talented artist. Pretty amazing stuff, huh?
Gizmodo has the skinny on how it was done.

Mary Katherine Ham Asks If Pundits Matter
February 23rd, 2007 by VinnyShort answer? No. Here’s her report:
You know, when you live in D.C. and among the blogs, it’s easy to forget you’re really weird– that not everyone knows that Andrew Sullivan’s dramatic shift from pro-war ideological conservative to strident war opponent based mostly on a single social-issue disagreement with the Bush administration may have lessened his credibility as a pundit.
Yep, you’re weird. I was working on a special project this week, one of the topics for which was, “Do Pundits Matter?” so I took to the mall to find out. Aside from getting, err, questioned about our filming several times by mall security, all went smoothly for Katie and me, and we met many nice folks who, oddly, have no preference for Eleanor Clift or Tony Blankley.
Yeah, I couldn’t figure it out either.
Heh… I love man on the street interviews.
Truthfully, I’d say most pundit bloggers don’t mean crap to the world, either, but that might get my official Member of the Blogospheretm Membership Card revoked!
Anti Bullying Advocates Try to Bully Team Owner
February 23rd, 2007 by VinnySYRACUSE, N.Y. - Anti-bullying advocates are beating up on the name chosen for the new professional basketball team in Syracuse, N.Y. The Syracuse Bullies will play in the American Basketball Association beginning this fall.
People who run anti-bullying programs are crying foul over the Bullies name. They say when children attend the games, they’ll get the wrong idea that bullies are cool.
A Rochester businessman, Nicholas Fritts, tells Syracuse TV station WSYR that the team’s name doesn’t promote bullying and shouldn’t raise concerns. The team’s mascot is a muscle-bound bull.
But the director of one Syracuse group, Jenna’s Foundation for Non-Violence, says the team name goes against everything anti-bullying educators are trying to get across to kids.
Why even have skin if it’s going to be this damned thin? Honestly, do these groups think bullies care about what they have to say?
Most children who attend games don’t give two shits what the name is, otherwise every kid in Minnesota would be running up to a hill and baying at the moon, and every kid in LA would be a barber.

How to differentiate…
February 23rd, 2007 by VinnyGeorge Lucas wants to block Digg from trademarking Digg because he had a video game out (that sucked immensely) called The Dig and it might create brand confusion. One young lad had the answer for that…
A helpful Digg commenter points out that potential consumer confusion could be alleviated by simply noting that one of these things is a 12-year-old game, and the other is a “website full of megalomaniacs.”

Wife’s on a roll…
February 23rd, 2007 by VinnySanta Fe is run by idiots, too…
February 23rd, 2007 by VinnyIn New Mexico, some pranksters placed three CD players in a church on Ash Wednesday, and had them play vulgar messages to disrupt the service (via BoingBoing). The police were summoned, and they soon detonated two of the three CD players, while the third one was taken back for fingerprint testing. This is ridiculous for multiple reasons. For one thing, it should have been clear that the CD players were placed there as a cruel prank, as evidenced by what they were playing. And if some people were going to make a bomb in the shape of a CD player, they wouldn’t have them play noise that would attract attention to them. The fact that they took the third player back to the lab is basically an admission that there was no way they were bombs, otherwise they’d have detonated that one too.
Boston was bad. Santa Fe is bad. In fact, everyone seems to be a bunch of uptight paranoid idiots these days.
