Jay Tea Likes It Too

Jay Tea at Wizbang (who, aside from Kim Priestap keeps me coming back to Wizbang on a daily basis) also agrees with the Washington Defense of Marriage folks who want to make the folks who oppose gay marriage on the basis of them not being able to have children put their money where their mouth is.

Hell, he even wants to take it one step further

Of course, I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t have a quibble or two, or at least a suggestion. Instead of locking in a three-year deadline for couples to have children, I’d make a fertility test part of the requirements for a marriage license, along with an Affidavit Of Intent To Reproduce.

If they can prove that they’re willing and able to have children, then let them get married. If not, then tough rocks — let them get their own “civil union” and see how THEY like it.

James, in my comments, called this argument a straw man because it only addresses the weakest point of the argument that gay marriage opponents make, and doesn’t address the entirety of their argument.

I disagree with that. I think that it forces people to re-examine their reasoning. If the folks who have been saying this all along can’t get behind this than it proves that they don’t really believe it anyway and are just piling things on in the hopes of making their argument stronger.

I’d love to see other arguments against in this way. I think the way that it corners people is quite interesting. I can’t wait to see the rebuttals start. So far, I’ve only seen people supporting this as logical (aside from James).

As a general rule, I have issues with people freaking out about “the sanctity of marriage” when it comes to same-sex marriages but not so much when it comes to their own marriages, say, or even the dime-a-dozen celebrity variety. True outrage should address the sky-high divorce rate, which suggests that more than a few straight marriages don’t care much about “sanctity.”

Nor is there a ton of outrage at the marriage of Britney Spears for 10 minutes to Fedex.

It’s amazing how malleable people’s standards become when you change issues.

I reckon that in most minds, though, Britney and Kevin made a sacred commitment and Bob and Tom never can.
