Shock of Shocks: Dave Winer Full of Himself (And “it”)

Posted at 10:49 am under Geeky

I’ve ripped on Dave Whiner here on numerous occasions. I find him to be a pompous bore with a big ego and a sour attitude. I’ve acknowledged his accomplishments and what he’s done for blogging (RSS? Nice job!) but I can’t get past what an annoying pissant he is.

I’m so tired of his “I’m important” mantra that I’ve gotten to the point where when I see his name in a blog post I just skip it because I really don’t care what he has to say. I’ve had enough of his “here I am, I’m important, pat me on the back” crap and even more than enough of his “I’m leaving blogging in 7.2 months” type posts.

Well apparently I’m not the only one who couldn’t possibly care less about Mr Whiner. Robert found this gem on the Radio site:

No, he’s not kidding folks. The clunkiest most user-unfriendly software in the world would’ve catapulted Yahoo! ahead of everything else. Like most people who got into blogging at its onset, I tried Radio Userland. it was awful. Slow. Unfriendly. Unintuitive. Feature poor.

In other words, it was a complete and total mess. It was quickly and easily surpassed by every other option out there and only the hard core geeks who were running their own servers even toyed with the idea of keeping it.

As a pay-to-own product, it wasn’t anywhere near as good as any of the free options that were out there.

RKB puts Whiner in his place quite handily:

It is the height of arrogance — or pie-in-the-sky dreaming — to think that a tool that wasn’t all that great in 2002 — and didn’t change much in the years after, as far as I’ve seen — could have helped give Yahoo! a competitive edge. Probably a very good reason why that deal never happened.

The height of arrogance? From Dave Whiner?

Sounds about right.

It’s funny because while I still have Scripting News in my RSS reader, I barely ever look at it. It was an accidental click the other day that led me to this particular post. Good for a few laughs now and then, but not much else.
