The real reason for the announcement.

I was about to jump into the fray about Katie Couric attacking Elizabeth Edwards. She really annoyed me with the peppering questions and the repetitive “statements” she was making that were disguised as questions. In a nutshell she was crapping on both John and Elizabeth Edwards because John isn’t dropping out of the campaign to take care of Elizabeth. You can read more of it here:

Now on its own, that really sucks. I’ve been wondering why they announced this illness if John wasn’t dropping out of the race if he didn’t want the sympathy vote. Makes you ponder what’s going on.

Then, later on, via Chris J. Weeks, I read the following:

In her first public speech since announcing last Thursday that her breast cancer had returned, Elizabeth Edwards appealed Monday for more federal funding for health research of all kinds, including stem-cell research.

“I think that we’re foolhardy to not be engaging in federal funding of stem-cell research in the most aggressive way we possibly can,” the wife of Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards of North Carolina told a luncheon meeting of supporters at the City Club of Cleveland.

The reason the issue has become so controversial is largely because people don’t understand it, she said.

“If people think that you’re throwing babies out, dissecting children, to do stem-cell research, I’m not for that,” said Edwards, who had accepted the speaking invitation before receiving her diagnosis of Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer.

Edwards was diagnosed with breast cancer at the end of the 2004 campaign and underwent surgery and chemotherapy. But Thursday, the couple disclosed that cancer had spread to her bones — a condition doctors described as incurable, but treatable.

Edwards noted that stem-cell work uses blastocysts containing clumps of 16 or 32 cells that were collected by fertility clinics but are no longer needed and would otherwise be thrown away.

I guess none of their paralyzed friends died this year so they needed a new reason to push for stem cell research, and what better way than a wife with incurable cancer? Understand that I have no problem with her being more than a good quiet wife. I’m okay with her being in the public eye and using her platform to bring about change.

I have a real problem, though, with the “head held high” bullshit we heard last week as they told us they didn’t want a sympathy vote, means nothing when we suddenly see her stumping for more stem cell research and every article that mentions her mentions her recent incurable diagnosis.

Sorry guys. I’ve lost a lot of respect for both of you today.

What a sick and heartless comment!

What’s “sick” and “heartless” about it?

It’s obviously true and explains the strange move of coming out and announcing your wife has cancer despite the fact that it will have no bearing on John’s run for the White House.

In 2004, John Kerry and John Edwards trotted out the stem cell issue right after Christopher Reeve died.

    This is what they do.

I have plenty of sympathy for Elizabeth Edwards, but I don’t like people dragging their illness out so that they can push a political agenda and not be questioned for it.
