Webbys for podcasting? Don’t get too excited…

Scott points out that the Webby Awards have finally recognized podcasting, but when you look at who’s been nominated in the one category (best podcast), you really need to understand that it’s not that big a deal.

Here’s the list of nominees:

Guardian Unlimited Podcasts

NPR Podcasts

Scientific American.com

Spout

The Onion

3 old media companies, one old web company and a company I’ve never heard of. Nothing innovative in any of them, honestly. No Tiki Bar. No Ask a Ninja. No Command N, Geekbrief, Rocketboom or Ze Frank.

I’m sorry but this doesn’t, to me, represent the best of podcasting; it represents a pat on the back for the old media companies doing old media shows in a new medium. Pardon me if I don’t mark this date as the day the world recognized podcasting.

The Webby’s are purely pay-for-play. They send out emails to sites that are fairly popular/hip (a very large pool), then you pay to be a nominee. Don’t want to pay? You’re no longer on the list.
