I sat in the Nosebleeds last night :-)
October 30th, 2007 by VinnyChris Roberts graciously had me on Nosebleed last night. If you haven’t listened to Nosebleed (and shame on you if you haven’t), it’s a sports podcast, but instead of being Sports Center, it’s more like sports from the regular fan point of view.
Check it out here and while you’re there, check out the many other fine podcasts at ISPN Media.

October 23rd, 2007 by VinnyI’m sure you remember when I posted this video…
Apparently, Stew Leonard’s is getting into the vegetarian genocide act…

Oh the irony of feeding a bunch of skinny prematurely-aged hippies with bad hair to a cow just so I can have a better steak…

Zero Tolerance Strikes Again
October 21st, 2007 by VinnyHas anyone else noticed how zero tolerance often looks a lot like zero common sense?
A single mother said the school district overreacted by suspending her 7-year-old son for drawing a smiling stick figure shooting another smiling stick figure with a gun.
Shirley McDevitt said her son, Kyle Walker, was suspended Thursday for one day after school officials found out about the drawing, sketched on a piece of paper.
Kyle attends second grade at the Dennis Township Primary School in Cape May County.
McDevitt, of Belleplain, said she was told he was suspended because of the school’s zero-tolerance policy for guns.
Okay… A… Why do we need to know she’s a single mother? Oh right… Because if some people did think he did something was wrong, that’s your instant mitigator; as if single moms are incapable of raising children and need our constant sympathy and support. How condescending.
B… This “zero tolerance” shit has gone entirely too far already and it keeps going further and further day after day. It’s one thing to have a zero tolerance policy about actual guns. You know… Real ones… Made of metal… With bullets… But a drawing of one in a stick figure’s hand?
Here’s the drawing that caused all the problems…

If you want to make the argument that this is threatening, then you have to explain to me why both “kids” are smiling. You can’t employ only some of the symbolism in a drawing then suspend a kid for it. If the symbolism implies that Kyle shot David, then why are both Kyle and David smiling? What does the smiling imply?
It is really silly how much both parents and schools wigged the hell out after Columbine, but at some point we may want to take hold of common sense and drag it, kicking and screaming, back into our schools.

The Moron in the Iron Mask
October 21st, 2007 by Vinny
Forget going on a hunger strike. In Colombia, an unemployed man has sewn shut his mouth and locked himself behind an iron mask to demand the government attend to his family’s desperate economic plight.
Luis Miguel Aldana, 52, told The Associated Press on Saturday that he adopted the peculiar form of protest five days ago, after being locked out of his apartment in Bogota. Instead of paying two months of rent, Aldana says he bought shoes for his three children.
He is demanding the government provide a loan to jump-start a cottage textile business and pay health care bills for his wife and children. Without the loan, he says his family will end up living on the streets.
“Oh please, government, save me…”
Shame. I know of a hair model / taste testing job available for Aldana. Shame he’s all sewn up and sealed up.
Chinese Characters Are Like So 1334!
October 21st, 2007 by VinnyAs if getting a tattoo wasn’t stupid enough, at least verify the meaning of the oh-so-cool foreign words you have etched into your skin…
A teenage-girl just wanted to impress her mother by having the word “mum” tattooed on her back in Chinese letters. After the tattoo was completed, the girl found out that the symbols meant “Friend from hell.”
A local paper said Charlene Williams, 19, only discovered something was wrong with her tattoo when a passing Chinese woman shouted at her, “Evil, evil, very bad.”
“I was shocked and angry, Charlene said. “Dad joked it said chicken chow mein.”
“It was worse than that.”
The 19-year old girl said she paid $20.43 when she had the Chinese characters tattooed on her back four years ago in Poole, Dorset.
After the horrifying incident, Charlene covered the characters with an image of a leaf design tattoo that cost $81.72.
Hey, had you not noticed, at least you would’ve had some nice trendy chinese characters on your back so everyone would ask you what they meant. After all, that’s what it’s all about… Getting people to ask you about your amazingly interesting tattoo.
HERE I AM, NOTICE ME!
Leopard: 300 new features. Vista: 100 rehashes
October 20th, 2007 by VinnyInteresting point from Griffith (at this point, it’s almost cliche for me to say how much I love Forever Geek and particularly Griffith’s writing) on the difference between Leopard and Vista…
Apple has officially announced Leopard’s shipping date, and Apple has re-lit it’s advertising campaign for the eagerly awaited 64bit Operating System. They were even kind enough to place most of those 300+ new features on a single page.
Besides all of the invisible work done to the OS, like making it 64bit, and increase it’s security. There is a list of over 300 new “palpable” features in it that you can actually see and use.
Yep. There sure is. But that isn’t the point of the story…
…I hoped[sic] over to Microsoft’s Vista website and managed to find a link which should have had the answers for all my questions, Microsoft’s 100 Reasons you’ll be speechless.
After reading most of those reasons, I have to say I was speechless. Not because I was wow’ed by the list, but because there just wasn’t much to say about them. Most of the features, or reasons as they call it, aren’t really reasons, but just clever marketing phrases such as:
You choose the fun—TV, games, music, movies, home videos, or photo slide shows—Windows Vista has all of your entertainment in one convenient place. Enjoy it on your PC, or gather friends and family around your home entertainment center, and let the good times roll!
Name one thing from the phrase above that you can’t already do with your 6 year old Windows XP
There are a few unsexy changes under the hood of Vista, but Griffith’s point is well-taken. Apple introduces 300 solid new features and overhauls a bulk of the OS in a point-release. Microsoft makes very few changes and a few tweaks, calls it a new version, charges way more for it, and many new features mean nothing to a bulk of their audience.
I may have to go through their list of great amazing spectacular new features so I can have a laugh.
Another post for another day.
Justin.tv: The Masses Are Asses
October 20th, 2007 by VinnyOh, this is so rich… Check this punk ass out as he bad mouths some chick working at a movie theater because she won’t let him take his Justin.tv camera inside a movie auditorium with it on.
That’s frigging rich. You do this for your work? To make a living you broadcast on Justin.tv?
Stop the shit.
Good on her for not giving a shit about his stupid explanation too.
I’m all for freedom to photograph and video wherever and whenever, but she was anything but a bitch in telling this moron to STFU and turn off the camera. It’s a movie theater. He tried to bully her and she wasn’t buying it. Good on her.
Lewis makes an apology on his blog:
I’ve always done my best to make others feel valued and appreciated in my presence, and in this case, I failed. I took offense to a portion of my life which I’m quite passionate about, and know that my passion runs deep for anything I dedicate my life to. I cannot be stubborn and feel justified in my actions because of my passion or the wrongdoings and disappointments I’ve faced in life and with people. Thus, I concede that I’m wrong and admit to my error. I will personally apologize to Bryanna in person this week and make the video available within this post.
*cough* marketing speak wishy washy weasel words alert *cough*
And, of course, he has the requisite breakdown complete with foot stamping, whining, bitching and complaining that nobody cared about him until he acted like a complete and utter asshole.
Where were you while I was interviewing everyone from Craig Newmark to Kevin Rose? Where were you when I was breaking major news on my blog which got overlooked by the majors? Where were you when I was bridging relationships with the world’s leading CEOs? Where were you during the many moments of my lifecast where I profusely thanked someone for their service? Where were you when I gave a tip to a server who didn’t deserve it? Where were you during my crappy relationships where I simply wanted love, respect and commitment? Where were you when I created my own PR campaigns and secured coverage for my projects in the Detroit News, Nashville Business Journal and other media oulets? Where were you when I gave money to the homeless? Where were you when I talked to Cisco about sponsorship of my podcast? Where were you when my father died? Where were you when I called for our nation to put an end to social constructs? Where were you when I got the exclusive interviews prior to the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and other mainstream outlets? Where were you when someone’s child said they loved me?
Nah, no one bothered to take interest in anything I mentioned above. No one took the time to see the life of a good and decent person who has only asked for the basics in return from others. Instead, you chose to gossip about one of the most meaningless and baseless portions of my life. What about everything else? Is all that matters in the world is when we’re pissed off, or when we’re frustrated with life and people? Does my life’s work and who I am as an individual not matter? How is it that I can achieve so much in life without mention, yet a minute-long video can have the world in chatter?
What is really important in our society today?
Oh really. Shut up. You chose to broadcast your life on Justin.tv so if you act like an asshole and everyone notices, it’s on you, my friend.
Tech Crunch has more stories including one about someone who I actually like getting thrown out of a book reading for putting it on Justin.tv.

This Shouldn’t Take Long
October 20th, 2007 by VinnyIt won’t take long to see this proven completely:
Frontline is the best reporting on television and possibly in the world. After watching it the other night I was struck by how aggressively the show, funded by the federal government, went after the Bush administration.
[...]
Even if there is no pattern of bias this government funded entity must often report information that will portray one side of the debate as detrimental to the country (like torture approved by the president).
Our democracy benefits from open, free and well-funded investigative journalism though. A strong press is a public asset. As long as Frontline pounds on the next (hopefully Democratic) administration then I say keep funding PBS.
January of 2009… A Democrat will most likely take office…
Suddenly everything will be right with the world.
Nothing will change, but their reporting will look so much rosier…
Just wait and see.

From the “Imagine if a White Boy Did It” Files…
October 20th, 2007 by VinnyWhenever you hear “hip hop community,” think of these thugs:
I was shocked to learn that two of the ‘Jena 6’ boys were recently award presenters at the 2nd Annual BET Hip Hop Awards. Bryant Purvis and Carwin Jones presented the award for Hip Hop Video of the year and thanked the hip hop community for their support during the Jena 6 trials. But wait – why should these two make an appearance among the accomplished hip hop artists of today? Why are two men who were charged with attempted murder and conspiracy being propelled into celebrity status?
Because they beat up whitey. They got whitey. Whitey got what was coming to him. Whitey made a symbolic attack. Whitey is a bad guy. Whitey is the devil.
If the boys were not punished at all, they still beat someone unconscious. How is this to be praised? How is the black community supposed build itself up, decrease violence and poverty rates, eliminate violence and obscene lyrics and ideas from music when they prop up people like these two as examples?
If violence in the “hip hop community” and the “black community” (what the hell is it with minorities and communities?) were to disappear tomorrow, all the thug pieces of shit rapping and the hypocritical douchebags that praise their every word like Al “Gotta Love Parachute Pants” Sharpton and Jesse “Shakedown” Jackson would have no jobs. The black “community” has no interest in getting rid of the hate that permeates it; they just find a million different ways to excuse it and they get out of having to deal with it by crying that in the 1960’s in the South and in the 1800’s, they were slaves and abused. Apparently, you can do whatever you want as long as you had some shit in your past; whether it had any bearing on your life or not.
These thugs that beat up this kid nearly to death are no different, and the fact that the “hip hop community” is honoring them at an awards show proves, at least to me, that they’re a whole lot more interested in the “gotcha” then they are about making peace and decreasing violence.
Hat tip to Sugar Ray Dodge for the link.

Information Salad Episode 62 Is Live
October 20th, 2007 by VinnyThis week Chris Roberts from Pod 25 and the soon-coming podcast Nosebleed sits in for the venerable Slobokan, Vinny has a question, and the boys run the bases.
- Chris talks about his podcasts at ISPN Media — Pod 25 and his new show, Nosebleed.
- Vinny has an interesting ethics question.
- Joe Torre was metaphorically slapped in the face, so he quit. Chris thinks the slap had at least a little merit.
- The MLBPA was in your head owning your stats. Not so much anymore.
- The skies aren’t so friendly for the kids anymore — well, not really the kids as much as the parents who don’t have their stuff together.
- Chris is going into protective custody after he unloads on Philly. Though, he’s not the only one who thinks Philly is quite flawed.
- There is… a new Captain… Kirk… coming to the next… installment… of the Star Trek series.
- A reporter from KDFW in Dallas got suspended for accosting someone who probably shouldn’t have been accosted. She is Hispanic, and as such, the National Association of Hispanic Journalists are giving the obligatory finger wag.
- Hardee’s wants to kill you. No, really, they really want you dead from their breakfast goodness.
