A Very White Way To Look At It
Holy sweet Jesus, could you imagine what would’ve happened if Hasselback had said “that’s a very black way to look at it?”
Apparently it’s “very white” think you shouldn’t vote for the gender or race of a candidate.
Well spank my ass and call me whitey!

Eh…they both have valid points, but I can’t stand Elizabeth Hasselback. She’s such a ‘tard.

“You’re white so you wouldn’t understand” is not a valid point in any discussion.

Yes, but I can understand why black people would be interested in voting for a black candidate and why women would be interested in voting for a female candidate. A black president is probably more likely to represent and address black interests -same goes a female president.

Doug Stanhope was on the Opie and Anthony show and basically lampooned the whole idea with a remarkably simple quote.
Secondly, women aren’t voting that way, but blacks are, and it’s been quite consistent.

Hi Vince
I’m from a city called Hamilton (armpit of Ontario,Canada)
I have an incredible story that I want to share with you
but I would like to run it by you first. Recently, Mr Paul
Gillin, American author of The New Influencers came to
our university and harolded your website so I thought I would
check it out. I really would hope that you would get back to me, Please. Certain things MUST be told to the world.
Thanx

Women aren’t voting that way? Because Doug Stanhope says it’s true? Plus, many black women face a tough choice…
My Point: It happens, and I don’t see anything wrong with it. There exists a likelihood of better representation -at least an understandable hope for one…

Vin, you’ve got to get back to her… that was a classic “Help me Obiwan… you’re my only hope!”.
I think that whoever becomes president should do what’s best for everyone… not just for their particular demographic. And I hate when people vote based on race/gender. That’s what screws up American Idol too. Just vote on their record, vote on the issues, vote on character. Color and gender were decided before they were born.

Patrick, I didn’t say Doug Stanhope said it wasn’t true so women aren’t voting that way. Look at the primary results. Women are split, blacks are not. It’s that simple.
Doug’s point had nothing to do with the voting split and everything to do with the silliness of black people voting for a black man because he’s black.

Yeah, but you have to consider that black women, of core constituency to the Democratic Party, are divided between voting for a black man and a white woman.
It’s not that I don’t necessarily agree that voting in accordance with a candidate’s record and espoused beliefs is more important, it’s that I don’t see anything wrong with minorities (and in a white man’s world, this includes white women) believing in someone who likely shares a particular perspective which has never really been given a strong voice in America.

No they aren’t, dude. That’s what I’m trying to tell you. Divided maybe in wondering who they should vote for, but when it comes to pulling the lever, they’ve gone overwhelmingly for Barack Obama. Race trumps gender in this case by a long shot and then some.
April 25th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
Well, that seems entirely based on supposition. Is there any reliable evidence which suggests this? It’s entirely possible, I’d just like to know it rather than believe it.
April 25th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
You know me better than that. I never say something unless I can back it up.
Pick a state. Any state.
April 25th, 2008 at 3:56 pm
Yeah… I guess you’re right. Still, though, I don’t know that there is anything wrong with that…
April 25th, 2008 at 4:00 pm
But,hey, Stanhope’s incorrect. White women, the argument could be made, are voting according to gender.
April 25th, 2008 at 4:42 pm
Of course there’s something wrong with that. We need to pick leaders that can lead the whole country, not just the areas that are predominantly black. Do we really think that voting for a woman will result in the president focusing on women’s issues? Right now, we have bigger concerns than that. And when people say “it’s about time we get a woman/minority president” they just sound stupid. How about “it’s about time we get someone who is qualified for the job as president”?
People are irritating.

Well, you tell me why you think that a black president would focus on black issues, whereas a woman will not focus on women’s issues…

Eh, you’re taking what I say the wrong way. I’m saying that the black president OR the woman president shouldn’t focus on their demographic and I would hope they wouldn’t. To be more clear, I should have said “we need to pick leaders based on their ability to lead the whole country, not just because we THINK that they’d do right to our demographic”. Hopefully the next president will be focusing on the war and the economy. I’m sure they won’t have enough time to deal with equalizing women’s pay or making sure that blacks are being treated equally. I would think the president should be sympathetic to all of his constituents.
Like Vin said, the “you’re too white” comment isn’t a valid argument, and it’s racist. If Hass had said “you’re too black”, she’d have to apologize to the world. I’m all for minorities having equal rights, and that means an equal shot for the presidency. However, that doesn’t mean that we toss someone in because they are of the right ethnic group of the time. I’m not voting for McCain… I’m a white male… but wait, my mother is Colombian, so should I vote for the minority?
I consider myself to be intelligent enough to be able to make an unbiased decision based on information beyond race and sex. Unfortunately, most people in this world are stupid. They find it more comforting to have someone in office because they “look like them”, regardless of his/her actual abilities.
I repeat, people are stupid.
