There are quite a few great comedians out there...

Bob Kelly
Jim Norton
Lewis Black
Mike Distefano
George Carlin

The difference is, I think, that the era of the theater-stand up commedian is pretty much over and you don't have "super comics" the way you did a few years ago. Dane Cook isn't attracting 16 year old girls with his comedy stylings, so he doesn't count.

I figure Carlin is probably the last of the "theater show" comedians. You could make a case that Lewis Black is along those lines, but most comedy now is done in small dive clubs with the occasional HBO special thrown in for good measure. That's just where comedy is right now.

I've been a fan of Izzard's for some time. Even though you can isolate some moments as hilarious [and thanks, Vinny for posting this, the real genius of his work is best experienced through an entire show. So many moments are woven together and are cross-referenced. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
As for Mitch Hedberg- yes, he was a comedic rockstar tragically gone too soon. But he can't be compared- he was his own thing.
I think there is more than enough room for a number of great comedic standup people. [Patton Oswalt!] I wish more would surface to fill the vacuum suck that is Dane Cook.

This guy is alright. Some things went on too long... if he honed that a bit it could be pretty hysterical.

My favorite is Mitch Hedberg. The dude was like a rockstar of comedy. That dude could say nothing and it would be hysterical.

I discovered him some years ago and do enjoy his stand up. If you haven't seen it yet, I recommend the series he's in with Minnie Driver called The Riches.
