A teen convicted in the “Jena Six” beating case shot himself in the chest and was taken to the hospital Monday, days after his arrest on a shoplifting charge, police said.

Mychal Bell’s wound isn’t life threatening, said Monroe Police Sgt. Cassandra Wooten. The 18-year-old used a .22-caliber firearm in the shooting around 7:40 p.m., she said.

Wooten believes Bell was upset over media coverage of the arrest last week.

“I think he was upset over the incident … and didn’t want to be in the news again,” she said.

Way to go, dope. You sure accomplished that goal.

    I have been following this story a bit and I think what he really wants is the opposite of what he says, more attention. that or maybe it was a legititamate attempt on his own life

    My friend has lived there since we got kicked out of our homes by Katrina. She says almost every one there is an idiot. All the kids do for fun there is drive around to fast food parking lots and honk there horns. Its a really backward and contradictory place that's Ultra “Christian” with packs of pregnant high schoolers. We went to visit her one day and we stopped by the Wal-mart (which was the size of a Big Lots) and one of use said “damn” and she said not to say that because people would start yelling at us or something. When the Jena Six incident happened ahe wasn't surprised but it at all and said it was something she would expect from that town.

    So even if he did off himself, there's a whole town of him left.
