I was actually always under the impression that the taxation was a backhanded way of banning cigarettes. My impression is that the people pushing these taxes for have been completely up front about that. People looking to ban smoking are really dishonest about this.
I think you’re wrong about why smoking has not been banned. Enough people smoke – combined with people that don’t want the government to regulate it – that it would still be a bad political move. Also, nationally, the tobacco lobby is still pretty strong.
You also talk about taxation not being effective in stopping smoking. Do you have any data on that?
Smoking is pretty much the worst legal thing you can do to your body. I’m glad I quit a couple of years ago. That said, it should not be banned or taxed this much.
