Health Insurance: Get Some!

I’m a big believer in a government-assisted health care plan for people who can’t afford it. That being said, Nick Gillespie points out an interesting study which stated that a sizeable number of people who don’t have health care don’t have it simply because they choose not to have it and could afford it if they really want it.

This reminds me of a conversation a friend and I were having about a college education and how people want it for free or they won’t get one even if they can afford it.

Talk about a sense of entitlement!

That's unfortunate, man. They aren't immune to legal action, though, by virtue of their non-profit status. Try contacting the city government -maybe you can have the building condemned. Hell, use this as a platform and run for city counsel. Those races aren't competetive, usually, and it sounds like you could run as the 'candidate for the afflicted.' Catchy, eh?

Either way, your employers sound like a bunch of fucking morons.
  • The problem, unfortunately, is my employer is a school district, which gives them non-profit status... which allows them to get away with a little bit more.

In fact, this past tuesday (i think) they announced at a faculty meeting that they were outsourcing to a company to do the website. I wasn't at the meeting, but teachers were asking me about it. I think that's totally unprofessional to announce something like that when the person that is, in effect, being replaced is still there and unaware.

Also, they had me working in my office that had toxic black mold right above my head for a good bit of time. I contacted OSHA, but apparently schools are not within their scope. It took three work orders (seperated by a span of 2 months each) for them to finally replace it. I got tired of my work orders being ignored, so I contacted the person that's supposedly incharge of facilities, he replied back with 'WAT SCHOOL ARE YOU AT" (yes in all caps)... you wanna know why he wanted to know that? So he could bitch to the building principal, who then bitched at me for not following normal procedure. As a result of breathing in the black mold every day for 8 hours, I kept getting headaches.

But yes, this is the kind of stuff i deal with on a daily basis.

    Jonathan,

You need to investigate your state's labor laws. What they're doing sounds illegal. I don't think that they can classify you as a part-time employee if you work full-time hours. Contact the department of labor in your state. Perhaps you should even contact the attorney general; you may be entitled to compensatory action. Bottom line: stick up for yourself. The man will often do anything he can to fuck you. Most of the time he gets away with it because he knows the laws, has the connections, and is confident that you don't have the wherewithall to offer viable opposition.

But do it anonymously so you're protected under whistleblower statutes.
  • My employer won't supply me with benefits. Any benefits. Even though I work full-time hours, they only have me on the books as a part time employee. I doubt it'd happen this year either... because if they were promote me, It'd be at the start of the fiscal year which is July 1... and I would have heard about it already from them.

    Oh well.
