The President of Notre Dame should be fired. Now. There is no acceptable excuse for the President of the United States, a pro-abortion monster of a human being to be speaking at a school who, for all its bluster, is a Catholic university and proud of its teachings of God’s message to its students. In fact, in its mission statement right on its website, we see the school’s perspective on Catholic teachings.
“We have a much more challenging mission than most universities. Most universities strive simply to be excellent educational institutions by the accepted standards of the profession. We do this at Notre Dame, and we have had great success. But we also foster and celebrate a distinctive mission to be a Catholic university, inspired and guided by a great spiritual tradition.”
It’s with that in mind that I ask the school what right it has to violate one of the most black and white teachings of the church: that abortion is murder and therefore a sin. Many have tried, with the aid of a complacent and complicit media to paint the protesters as extremists and a minority. We can just ignore these pesky kids because they don’t speak for the University. Well, frankly, I think those are the only graduates who actually get what it means to be a Catholic University.
We’re told that we’re meant to hear other viewpoints and give them an equal chance.
We’re told that holding an opposing viewpoint and daring to defend it is akin to “extremism.”
What would happen if a famous Holocaust denier was invited to speak at Brandeis or Yeshiva University? How about a KKK member at one of the many black universities in the South? Hell, David Duke couldn’t get a word in edgewise; why is that?
It’s because when a university claims to stand for something, their feet should be held to the fire when they violate those beliefs. If a school is going to call itself a “Catholic University,” then there are certain core tenets of the religion that they should be observing. While some issues of the Catholic faith may be debatable, abortion is not now nor has it ever been one of them. Just like Jim Crow and slavery aren’t debatable at black colleges. Just like the Holocaust isn’t debatable at Jewish schools.
Barack Obama encouraged people to not reduce the opposition to their opinion to that of caricature and to use “fair-minded” words instead of the inflammatory rhetoric of the past. That’s all well and good, but it’s also, unfortunately, a load of crap, because we all know what he means by “inflammatory.” The pro-abortion lobby in this country isn’t inflammatory; they’re just defending the right to murder their babies at will. Even Texas, one of the last true hardcore red states just made a move to decriminalize infanticide. They’re just defending mothers; it can’t be inflammatory. You, on the other hand, with your protest signs and prayer vigils, are quite inflammatory. Your view that your opponents in this issue are doing evil things is just you not being fair-minded.
This is the world you live in, my friends.
It amazes me how in the year 2009, we’re still being lectured on black and white thinking, yet that’s all the left in this country ever wants. For years, the running joke was George W. Bush’s proclamation that you were either “with us or with the terrorists,” and that was held up as simplistic conservative thinking. A mere seven years later and abortion and gay marriage are treated as black and white issues from which you may not have a dissenting opinion. You cannot want to criminalize the murder of children because it’s extremist. You cannot believe marriage is between a man and a woman because that’s homophobic. You cannot believe that affirmative action is wrong because that’s racist.
But, if you’re Catholic, you should find room in your heart to see the other side of abortion. See, if you’re on the other side facing the left in a debatable issue, you should just put yourself in their shoes because their views are the right ones. In talking about Abortion, the President reminded us that women don’t make the decision lightly:
“Maybe we won’t agree on abortion,” Mr. Obama told graduating students, relatives and professors, “but we can still agree that this heart-wrenching decision for any woman is not made casually. It has both moral and spiritual dimension.
I’m sure murderers don’t take their actions lightly; so does that mean I need to revere and pay homage to them? Hear him, Catholics of the world. You should “understand” the other point of view. You should “understand” that since it’s a tough decision, your views should have wiggle room in them.
We’re treading in dangerous times in this country. For eight years we heard the left howling about how one sided the thinking in this country had become. The only difference now is that it’s the same folks who bitched for eight years that are framing the debate and silencing opposition. There is no gray area for Catholics on abortion. That’s oppressive extremism.
There’s no gray area for the left on gay marriage, abortion, and affirmative action. That’s enlightened progress.
