Freedom is Freedom, Atheists Included

Oh Jesus, this one’s a real scream…

Alright, look… I’ve met more asshole atheists than cool ones in my life. Seriously. Most of the ones I’ve met are downright arrogant dismissive and condescending. Ironically enough, most of them are every bit as zealotous as the Christians they constantly make fun of.

I do say most, though, because I know a few that are some of the most awesome people I’ve ever met.

This woman, however, deserves to be smacked in the face with the Flying Spaghetti Monster. Seriously. This country has freedom of religion, yes, but it’s not meant to ensure that you practice some kind of religion. It’s as much about freedom from religion as it is freedom of religion (at least in the sense that you’re not obligated to practice any religion at all).

To argue that you need to believe or leave is utterly assinine. To argue that atheism is responsible for crime when God-fearing people make up 85% of the population of this country is the dumbest thing I may have ever read anywhere on the internet, and over the years I’ve seen some real doozies.

I believe in God. I find most atheists that I’ve met to be reprehensible people and I would never argue that they don’t have as much right to be here and enjoy the freedoms this country provides just as much as I do. Doing so is completely un-Christian-like and an affront to the freedoms you claim to love so much.

Case closed.

Update: Of course it’s friggin’ fake. *sigh* Truth be told, I should’ve checked first, but it’s not beyond the realm of possibility that there are quite a few people out there who think similarly (I’ve met a few, which is probably why I fell for this one).

Ironically enough, most [atheists] are every bit as zealotous as the Christians they constantly make fun of.

As zealous as Scott Roeder, for example?

In any case, yeah, the letter was meant as a joke, though sentiments like it are regularly expressed. Consider this one by former President George H. W. Bush: “No, I don’t know that atheists should be considered as citizens, nor should they be considered patriots. This is one nation under God.” Prominent atheists like Sam Harris and Richard Dawkins are castigated as “militant” for expressing far milder sentiments than this.
