Canadian PM Stephen Harper Desecrates the Eucharist

What a disgrace!

[flv:harper.flv 480 360]

There’s no defending this and no spinning it. He clearly pockets the Eucharist. Some have said he took it later on, but that’s not proper either. This is the body of Christ! (And if you don’t believe that, that’s fine; then don’t accept the Eucharist!!)

Disgusting.

Simply because you said I couldn’t, I’m going to both spin this and defend it. :)

This looks to me like a pretty clear example of a non-Catholic flubbing a three second pressure decision at Communion, taking it instead of politely passing and accepting a blessing in its place. I’ve seen this type of scenario first hand in my life, where a Protestant Christian (or other, fill in the blank) is in attendance with a family or group of Catholics and is unsure what to do at this very moment during the service. They are out of their comfort zone at the mass in the first place, often intimidated by the formal structure and serious tone of the Catholic service.

He shouldn’t be taking Communion at all here (which is the opposite of many Protestant services, where any and all Christians can take communion), but I can easily see how he got caught in an awkward moment, as a non-Catholic in a fish-out-of-water situation.

Most of the folks who get caught in this scenario aren’t exactly in the same high profile job as Mr. Harper and not subject to Zapruder-like dissection of video footage.
