For Once: Straight Talk on Health Insurance

Now that the economy is straightened up and the stimulus is working its magic and everyone is happily employed, we can stop talking about how bad the economy is and start talking about how bad healthcare is.

Here’s something I posted back in May because it should be even more relevant now. It’s Nick Gillespie from Reason.tv talking about an interesting angle in the “uninsured” crisis.

You need to watch the above video in your browser; it may not appear in some feed readers.

I find it most interesting because I’ve been asking myself the same question over and over again. If we have 45 million (give or take; we don’t really know, but that’s the common estimate) people without health insurance, why do we need to ruin the whole system for everyone including people who do have it in order to cover those people?

And now, seeing this video, you have to wonder if the number is half that (figure 20-25 million people) who actually need it and can’t get it and the other half who have the option and are just waiting for a handout, is it really worth revamping an entire system for the entire country to help out less than 1/10th of its population?

Give ‘em help if they need it. Of course! It’s not asking a lot, honestly, and it’s something we should be doing anyway, but people who can afford it and simply choose not to? Screw them! I couldn’t care less about you if you have the option (in some capacity, whatever that capacity is) and you don’t take advantage of it.

As Obama gets closer to his dream of a nice socialized system for the entire country, keep in mind what government-run anything is like. For reference, check out the awesome IRS, the fantastic DMVs, and don’t forget that bastion of efficiency and excellence the United States Postal Service. In fact, the next time you’re standing in line to send a package via 22 day express mail, and you’re waiting in line as some mess behind the counter counts singles as if she’s examining each one for the junta virus, imagine that same mess standing between you and a stitch at a hospital so that 10% of the country can be covered and we can all suffer equally.

What a crock. I just hope that unlike the bailouts before it our politicians have the spine to stand up to this stupidity and say enough is enough.
