Obama could end “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” today. If he really wanted to.

First the obvious, via Hot Air:

DADT is another matter entirely. All it would take to end it is an executive order. Obama is, after all, the Commander in Chief. Obama wants Congress to take the heat for this as well, though, and has passed the buck on the issue since his first day in office. What’s more, on this issue, Obama has it right. DADT served a useful purpose in showing that gays can serve honorably in the military, but the time has come to end it. Unfortunately for his cheering throngs at the HRC dinner, Obama doesn’t have the courage of his own convictions to take that step himself.

So why doesn’t he? Possible reasons.

A. He doesn’t necessarily believe it should be ended and is just playing politics with a small but very vocal minority?

B. He believes it, but not strongly enough to take the inevitable heat for it when the decision is made.

C. He believes in it, but wants to make it official closer to the election so Democrats who are running for office can benefit from it.

D. He thinks we’re all stupid and are going to blame some kind of strange right wing conspiracy in Congress, a body that has no authority to change this policy, for not getting it done.

I think that covers it… Did I miss any?

Either way, the point is simple… There’s no reason for Obama to wait for this and he could do it with one stroke of the pen and that would be the end of it. Maybe he could handle it on his flight to Oslo to accept his Nobel?
