God Did Not Give You a Grammy

I’m constantly reading and hearing people talk about the great things He’s done for them, and yet I can’t help but wonder… Does God even bother with us on this planet?

Every black singer goes running to the stage and thanks God for his AMA, VMA, or Grammy.

Every athlete thanks God for their MVP trophy or their championship ring or belt.

Every one thanks God for everything, and that’s all well and good, but are we really so arrogant to believe that God stops what he’s doing to hand over a Moonman trophy to Taylor Swift at a stupid awards show while he lets thousands upon thousands of children around the world starve to death or lets mothers give birth to kids with horrible birth defects that essentially ruin their lives?

Do you think God blessed you with a college degree, and at the same time allowed some child to be born illiterate?

Do you think God saved your life in an accident so a school full of children in southern Africa can be raided by warlords and all the children could be raped or killed?

I mean, really. Do you think God intervenes in your life? And if so, why doesn’t He do a better job of intervening in other lives?

I believe in God. Nothing’s going to shake that belief. I just think that, as humans, we have a stupid way of attributing all of our successes to Him while, at the same time, blaming our shortcomings, our failures, and the failures of the world on man.

Here’s the point.

GOD IS NOT INTERVENING IN YOUR LIFE. God gives you the tools and tells you to build a house. If you build a house with them, good job. If you kill someone with the hammer and bury them with the shovel, bad job. If you eff up your life, you have to fix it. Not God. God is not going to clean up your mess. God is not going to save your marriage. God is not going to get you out of debt. God is not going to reward the good on earth and punish the bad. Why? Because that’s not what God does.

God is the CEO of a cosmic Home Depot. Everyone has an equal shot at equipping themselves. As long as people like Linda McCartney can die of cancer while scumbags like Bernie Madoff can survive, I don’t need any more proof that God lets us do our thing and judges us afterward.

Patches, my cat of 3 years, is going to be put down today because God didn’t intervene in her life, either. He didn’t fix her kidneys, her stomach, her blood. None of it. Yet that same God, if you’re to believe human beings, gave Michael Vick, a serial dog abuser and murderer another shot at playing in the NFL.

If you believe that, just stick your head in a fucking blender, turn it on, and do it on camera so we can all loff and loff.
