A Moderate Republican?

This is how insane the media has become. They’re definining Dede Scozzafava as a “moderate” Republican. I’m sorry, but her positions have nothing to do with moderation or being a Republican.

She’s pro abortion.
She’s pro gay marriage.
She supported ACORN and opposed defunding it.
She’s almost close-mindedly pro labor and pro union.
She’s pro stimulus.
Daily Kos endorsed her saying she’s “willing to raise taxes when required” and “to the left of most Democrats on social issues.”

And on…

And on…

She’s not a moderate Republican, she’s a typical Democrat. The fact that Democrats endorsed her so willingly along with big labor and Planned Parenthood should be an indication to anyone with a brain that calling her a moderate Republican is, to say the least, laughable. The one big thing people point out is that she’s “anti-gun-control,” as if that makes her positions more moderate.

It would be hysterical if it weren’t so sad.

If you were to turn it around, what does the media call Democrats who oppose abortion (about 20% of the House), who oppose gay marriage (most national Democrats) and/or are fiscally conservative (the Blue Dogs)? And why does being “willing to raise taxes when required” make you a Democrat? Are you saying the Republican party is that ideologically rigid that they don’t support any taxes?

The issue here to me is that “moderate” is a bullshit term. All you have to do is buck your party on a couple of issues and all the sudden you are a “centrist”. It doesn’t mean you are moderate on any one issue.

The other point is that a New York Republican is going to exist on a different part of the spectrum than a Alabama Republican just like a South Carolina liberal will exist on a different part than a Massachusetts liberal. You can’t have ideological purity in a country this big.

If the media sees all of those things in one person, it’s safe to say they’re a Republican. One issue alone doesn’t make you a moderate, or a centrist, and yes, I do agree that in some ways, that’s a bullshit term.

And while you can’t have ideological purity, you can’t adopt every Democrat position and then just call yourself a liberal Republican. You’re not. You’re a Democrat.
