Every state is different is different when it comes to welfare since it is yet another Federal program that has been handed off to the States to subsidize & manage & unfortunately, like Medicaid, a lot of states get it wrong. However, the only requirement for full welfare recipients is if after 6 months, one or both parents are not employed in some manner, they have to attend job fairs and employment classes. And start doing as is required for those receiving unemployment benefits.
Here in GA, if you are receiving unemployment benefits you have to submit a report on who, when & where you applied for jobs or sent your resume to. I think it's monthly. If you receive food stamps and you are unemployed, after certain number of months you have to start doing the same thing, unless the food stamps are being issued to children with a deadbeat parent.
Personally, Nathan & I receive SSI. I don't like it. I don't want to be part of the system. And believe me, it isn't much money, for us it is about the medical benefit. When one doesn't have insurance, is considered 100% physically disabled (or in Nathan's case 100% mentally disabled) it leaves you being uninsurable even by companies that don't cover pre-existing conditions. There is no drug testing for those on Disability in this state for one reason only. Marijuana is not legal in this state. However, doctors can prescribe Marinol, the synthetic form of THC which can be acquired with a prescription and it will be covered in certain cases. They also allow doctors to “silently” advocate marijuana for severe pain & end of life patients as this takes a financial burden off of the state. So to test for drugs within the Disability population would be a nightmare of trying to figure out who should & shouldn't be tested.

Just for the record, I would never try to take anything out of the hands out of those getting disability in some form. That's an entirely different animal.
