IT.tv Episode 249: Why do right-wingers hate Avatar?

I don’t know if I still consider myself a “right-winger” these days, but I wasn’t a big fan of Avatar. Not because of the over-the-top Victim vs. Oppressor theme. And I loved the visuals.

What irked me about the movie was the same nausea I experienced with most of Star Wars: Episode I – the Phantom Menace (the one with Jar Jar Binks – yeah, THAT one). Too many of the key plot-driving actions taken by the main characters didn’t make sense to me.

Why didn’t Jake tell the Na’vi what the humans were after at some point? And none of the highly experienced, nature in-tuned Na’vi warriors ever thought of pouncing the God-beast from above? And this noob KNEW that this would #1 work, and #2 automatically regain the trust of the people that just exposed his utter treachery? And really, not one of the Na’vi objected to the notion of trusting this guy again simply because he tamed their sacred God-beast? The final fight between the commander dude and Sully had a lot of DUH moments too, but those are generally forgivable in fight sequences. Those to name a few.

Great movie to have as a screensaver or something. But the plot left much to be desired, even without it’s disgusting hippie-ness. ;)

      You’ve got questions, I’ve got answers :-)

      1. That I don’t have an answer for.

      2. They tried, but failed. Also, the fact that he was somewhat of a deity could explain a lot.

      3. He didn’t but he was kind of out of options. Neytiri did get a sign that he was different; maybe with everything put together, they assumed he was being forthright.

      4. The Na’vi did what their leaders told them to do (namely Neytiri’s mom).

The final fight was kinda weak, but the battle scene that preceded it was brilliant.

      Just sayin :-)
