Democrats May Shelve 9/11 Bill For Political Reasons

Isn’t this special?

Legislation to help 9/11 first responders sickened by toxic dust at Ground Zero could finally be put to a vote Wednesday on Capitol Hill. As CBS 2HD’s Kathryn Brown reports, however, there’s word the decision may be delayed yet again because of a separate political issue.
Wednesday’s vote would be the second attempt to pass the legislation in the House, after the first failure on July 29.

Back in July things got ugly when Democrats were unable to get the two-thirds majority needed. “We would have passed it last night if you helped,” Congressman Anthony Weiner said to Congressman Peter King on August 19.

“That’s the bottom line Peter. You cost us this bill,” he said.

King’s response: “Don’t say that to me. You frauds and phonies in the Democratic Party did this.”

Wednesday morning’s Wall Street Journal reported House leaders were considering canceling the scheduled vote, fearing that Republican members would try to attach a politically-sensitive amendment that would bar treatment for illegal immigrants who worked at Ground Zero.  The paper points out that moderate Democrats facing tough races would prefer not to have to vote on that so close to November.

It should be really interesting to see the defenses from the same people who, in as self-important a fashion as possible, claimed that the Republicans were playing politics with people’s lives…
