When I was a kid, my dad taught me how to make copper bracelets using the core of coaxial cable and some clear varnish. For the most part they came out pretty awesome. You could brade the copper into a nice look, and by clear-coating it, you stop it from turning green on your arm.

Of course, that’s good if you’re the DIY type. If not, then you may want to look into the copper bracelets sold at Billy the Tree. Aside from the intricate designs (check this one out!) they have lots of other styles and materials including a whole line of magnetic anklets, bracelets, necklaces, rings, and so on. Incidentally, the best part of a magnetic clasp is that you don’t have to have your husband help you put your jewelry on when you’re getting dressed for a night out.

Billy the Tree offers free shipping worldwide and they offer a money back guarantee, meaning you can pick something out online and not feel like you’re stuck with it if you don’t like it later on (although that’s probably not going to happen considering the variety of styles they have available). If you’re on the lookout for a few copper bracelets or something a little more traditional, check these guys out. There’s something there for everyone!

If you’re in the market for eyeglasses, you’ve undoubtedly discovered the one thing everyone has discovered. They’re expensive. Very expensive.

Oh sure, you can go with your eyeglass plan from your union, but have you seen the frames you can pick from that are “union frames?” Really? I don’t know about you, but most of them remind me of stuff seniors wear as they hike up their Bermuda shorts to go to the movies at 11:30 in the morning for their senior matinée. I prefer something a little more stylish.

So what’s a guy to do?

The Brooklyn Liberal Examiner has an idea…

Zenni sells full prescription eyeglasses starting at just $8 per pair. Yes, that’s right, eight bucks. Talk about cheap prescription eyeglasses, huh? Their prices range up to around $40 and there is an extra charge if you want bifocals or thick lenses. They also charge extra for anti-glare coating (though it’s $4.95 extra as opposed to around $50-$100 extra elsewhere). Shipping is just $4.95 no matter how many pairs you order, so it pays to order for the whole family at one time.

I don’t know about you, but to me that sounds like a really good deal. And they’re not “union frames” either. Take a look at some of the styles available below:

The lesson here is an obvious one. You can get inexpensive glasses that aren’t out-of-style and embarrassing to wear. You do have to know your prescription (which means you have to have a proper eye exam), but Zenni even gives you pretty straightforward instructions on what you need to know when placing your order.

Stop running to the mall to get your glasses and spending a fortune for fashion and give Zenni a whirl!

Illinois home health workers have rejected unionization by two unions by an overwhelming majority, opting for no union reprsentation in spite of Governor Pat Quinn’s illegal pressure tactics and numerous threats and tons of expensive lobbying by the SEIU and AFSCME.

Illinois workers who are paid by the state to care for severely disabled people in their homes have voted down an effort to unionize.

More than 3,000 home health care workers mailed in their ballots this month; the ballots were counted on Monday and most of those workers voted not to join a union, according to Alan Symonette, an arbitrator with the American Arbitration Association, which counted the vote.

The workers could have voted to join the American Federation of State, county of Municipal Employees or the Service Employees International Union, but more than half of them voted to remain non-union.

The vote came after Gov. Pat Quinn signed an executive order paving the way for home health care workers – most of whom care for their own family members – to decide if they should unionize and collectively bargain with the state on how much funding they receive.

Toodle-oo thugs. Guess people are wising up to your crap, huh?

After all… Lying to Congress is a crime…

“Lying to the Congress of the United States is a crime, and if the Speaker is accusing the CIA and other intelligence officials of lying or misleading the Congress, then they should come forward with evidence and turn that over to the Justice Department so that they can be prosecuted. If that’s not the case, I think she ought to apologize to our intelligence professionals around the world. You have to understand, John, we treat prisoners, detainees, prisoners of war better than any country in the world. And our intelligence professionals have done a marvelous job in doing their job – keeping Americans safe. And when you think about the fact that we lost 3,000 of our citizens on September 11th, we’ve lost nearly 5,000 of our soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan fighting for our safety and security here in America, all of this information that helps our soldiers, that helps our border security people, all comes from our intelligence professionals around the world. And instead of criticizing them, instead of accusing them of lying, we ought to be patting them on the back and telling them, ‘job well done.’”

So let’s see… If Nancy Pelosi were truly lied to, then bring forth some kind of prosecution of the liars.

It won’t happen.

She wasn’t lied to.

She just never thought that she could stand at her podium and lie and that anyone would dare call her out on it and make her prove her case.

This morning I kinda got annoyed with Donald Trump in my post about the finale of Celebrity Apprentice. Frankly, by picking Joan Rivers, he earned some scorn and for all his talk about professionalism, integrity, and business sense, he picked the old broad because she was feisty.

Today, however, he stood behind Carrie Prejean and basically told all the folks clammoring for her crown to be taken to shut up because her horrid right wing evil homophobic views (that’s sarcasm for you slower folks out there) were no different than the stated views of God’s gift to mankind, President St. Barack Obama. You have to love this:

At a press conference addressing Carrie Prejean’s disputed title in the Miss USA competition, pageant owner Donald Trump compared Prejean’s stated views on gay marriage to Obama’s.

“It’s the same answer that the president of the United States gave,” Trump said. “She gave an honorable answer. She gave an answer from her heart.”

In her own remarks moments later, Prejean echoed Trump’s statement, telling reporters: “The president of the United States, the secretary of state, and many Americans agree with me in this belief.”

Damn effing right they do. I’m not one of them, but all the folks talking about how she doesn’t “represent” California with her views need to realize that the anti-gay marriage stupidity, Proposition 8, passed by 5% in the November elections, proving that more Californians agree with her than that heterophobic piece of crap Perez Hilton.

I for one support gay marriage. Not civil unions; all out gay marriage. I think it is a matter of equality and I think it is a stupid thing to fight over. That being said, the constant harassment, belittlement, and strong arm tactics the gay lobby is using to try and arm-wrestle equality in are doing nothing but alienate people, and some of them even support the idea (like me). I’ve never hated the people on my side of an issue as much as I hate the heterophobic hetero-bashing gay lobby pushing for marriage rights.

It doesn’t have to be this way, and it shouldn’t be.

Last week we were in the cold and dark days of winter. There seemed little hope. We were doomed to shiver until our hearts could shiver no more. We trudged through the cold weather, the lack of warmth, and the oppressive forces trying to hurt us.

We banded together bringing warmth and happiness to each other in hopes that one day things would change.

Today is a day of change.

For the first time in a week, my car has heat, and I have Prestone to thank. It turns out I just needed some anti-freeze, and they sell it in convenient pre-diluted form at Pep Boys.

I was hoping for warmth. Its arrival was a welcome change.

Now there’s some hope and change we can believe in.

Obama apologized in a voicemail he left on Agar’s cell phone at 3:16 p.m:

“Hi Peggy. This is Barack Obama. I’m calling to apologize on two fronts. One was you didn’t get your question answered and I apologize. I thought that we had set up interviews with all the local stations. I guess we got it with your station but you weren’t the reporter that got the interview. And so, I broke my word. I apologize for that and I will make up for it.

“Second apology is for using the word ’sweetie.’ That’s a bad habit of mine. I do it sometimes with all kinds of people. I mean no disrespect and so I am duly chastened on that front. Feel free to call me back. I expect that my press team will be happy to try to make it up to you whenever we are in Detroit next.”

I’m not usually moved by words, but this really got me…

“Ever since China was awarded the Olympic Games and pursued them as a national prestige project, the flame no longer stands for fairness and peace. It now also symbolizes a repressive regime which battles ambitions for autonomy like in Tibet, which hurts human rights and suppresses dissenting opinions.

“That is why demonstrators in London and Paris hurled themselves at the runners bearing the torch around the globe. They want to extinguish it. Beijing is seething with anger and talking of ’sabotage.’ It wanted to use the Olympic Games as a stage to present itself in the best light. Now it must look on dumbfounded as it loses control over the organization of the spectacle outside its own borders. The party officials are helplessly watching the protests in Paris and London that are likely to be repeated in San Francisco and Delhi. The torch relay is turning into a political symbol, the damage to the image is increasing with every kilometer.”

“The pressure on China is mounting. But so far it appears incapable of finding a way to deal with this challenge.”

So, I was listening to Munchcast, the excellent junk food podcast hosted by Leo Laporte and Cammy Blackstone. The episode was for Easter, and on it Cammy mentioned an Easter Bunny cake she had been making forever and ever, so I decided to give it a go since it sounded like such a cool idea.

First step, make two 8″ yellow cakes (I did it from a mix).

When they’re done cooling (and do make sure they’ve completely cooled, or you’re likely to make a massive mess), cut one of the cakes as demonstrated below:

After you’ve done the necessary cutting, assemble the pieces as shown below:

Next, slather on a healthy dose of frosting appropriately colored for an Easter Bunny. I chose pink…

Then, since my frosting came with some sprinkles, I decided to decorate his tie appropriately.

Finally, just touch up the bunny with some eyes, nose, mouth, ears, and so on. For the nose, I stuck in one of my Cadbury Creme Eggs, my favorite part of Easter…

Voila. Instant Easter Bunny.

A piece of fair warning, though. I did use almost two cans of frosting for the two cakes. You could probably do this with two smaller pans and only use one mix and one can of frosting. At least I know for next time

Thanks to Cammy and Leo for the inspiration. I never would’ve tried this if they hadn’t given me the idea!
