Nashville Coffee Company Supports O&A and Free Speech

May 17th, 2007 by Vinny

As of May 15 at 3:30pm EST, we pulled our advertising spots from XM Radio. We pulled our spots from both Radio Disney (Channel 115) and The Virus (Channel 202). We have done this in response to XM Radio’s censoring of the Opie and Anthony Show by suspending them for 30 days. It is apparent that XM Radio is beholden to crybaby special interest groups who cannot separate humor from reality. It is also unfortunate that XM Radio executives don’t have the guts to stand up for their on air talent.

I have contacted other XM Radio advertisers and have asked them to pull their adverting spots. It appears that many of them already are. Please be advised that spots cannot be pulled overnight. Some are already in the “hopper” and may air for the remainder of the week. Some other sponsors are doing the right thing and are pulling their spots. Please give them time to finish the cycle this week before you actively boycott their products. Thanks for your time.

HUGE Information Salad News!!

April 27th, 2007 by Vinny

Tonight on Information Salad, we’re going to have Tim Westergren from Pandora on to talk about the recent Copyright Royalty Board decision that, if left as is, would ultimately spell the end for internet radio as we know it.

You won’t want to miss this one tomorrow when we post it.

Also, if you have any questions you’d like me to ask Tim, put them in the comments and I’ll be sure to bring them up during the show.

Thanks!

Why Bloomberg is The Best Mayor Ever

April 25th, 2007 by Vinny

While other mayors have talked about stuff in New York City, Bloomberg actually does things. No mayor in the past would dare mention something like congestion pricing because it would amost be a guarantee that re-election wasn’t happening. Instead, Michael Bloomberg puts it right out there on the table because it’s the right thing to do. How often do you see a politician pick something that’s the right thing to do over something that’s politically expedient?

Greatest Rubik’s Cube Video Evar

April 19th, 2007 by Vinny

What’s particularly cool is the explanation of how he managed to pull this one off… Check it out:

To make this I stretched the song to twice as long and lip synced in slow-motion while solving the rubik’s cube. I then doubled the video speed and set it to the original regular speed music.

Way to go, Josh!

Stuffr Launches

April 18th, 2007 by Vinny

So I’ve been helping my good buddy Slobokan out with a new project of his and he has officially released it to the public so we can all share in its greatness.

There are many blogging clients for Windows, most of which completely suck because they’re either abandoned or bloatware. Lots of them support thousands of platforms that no one uses, features no one wants, and are laggy, buggy, and so on. Face it, you need something light, fast, and with just the right combination of power and slickness.

That’s where Stuffr (no ‘e’) comes in.

Stuffr is what you need to blog, not what some company looking to sell a program needs you to have. Trust me when I tell you, you won’t be disappointed. Slobokan has made every effort to get it to look good and perform well, and frankly, you can leave it running in your tray all day and it won’t eat your system memory (a feature of importance if ever there was one).

For more information and to download version 0.7.5, click here.

Remember, it’s beta, and it’s not finished, but it’s more than enough to get a feel for it. I use it for Windows when I have the unfortunate need to run Windows (even us Mac-heads have to use the cursed thing every now and then) and it’s utterly fantastic.

Enough glowing.

Go get it.

A Happy Day

April 18th, 2007 by Vinny

Good news today from the Supreme Court. The ban on partial birth abortions has been upheld by the Supreme Court which means that the law passed in 2003 is now the law of the land, constitutional, and that’s that.

The 5-4 ruling said the Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act that Congress passed and President Bush signed into law in 2003 does not violate a woman’s constitutional right to an abortion.

The opponents of the act “have not demonstrated that the Act would be unconstitutional in a large fraction of relevant cases,” Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote in the majority opinion.

The decision pitted the court’s conservatives against its liberals, with President Bush’s two appointees, Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito, siding with the majority.

Justices Clarence Thomas and Antonin Scalia also were in the majority.

It was the first time the court banned a specific procedure in a case over how—not whether—to perform an abortion.

Abortion rights groups have said the procedure sometimes is the safest for a woman. They also said that such a ruling could threaten most abortions after 12 weeks of pregnancy, although government lawyers and others who favor the ban said there are alternate, more widely used procedures that remain legal.

I’ve yet to see any examples of how a partial birth abortion is safer for a woman. My contention has always been that if it were for the health of the mother, the actual process of birthing a child and then killing it still involves actually birthing the child, but what I believe is no longer relevant.

It’s the law of the land.

The baby murdering industry has lost.

It’s a great day.

Imus ain’t layin’ back…

April 12th, 2007 by Vinny

Good on him for not just bending over.

IMUS: ‘WHEN WILL SHARPTON APOLOGIZE TO DUKE PLAYERS’?
Thu Apr 12 2007 10:02:02 ET

Patrick Gavin with FISHBOWLDC reports on Imus’s radio show this am…

Barely 12 hours after being fired from MSNBC…

6:12 AM: On Imus’ radio program (no longer simulcast on MSNBC) this morning, Chris Carlin, who covers sports for the program, discussed yesterday’s dismissal of charges against the Duke lacrosse players.

(rough transcript)

DON IMUS: When will Al Sharpton be apologizing to them?

(LAUGHTER)

CARLIN: I’m unaware of such a press conference.

IMUS: I’ll be darned…

UPDATE 6:28 AM: After a station break, Imus came back to discuss MSNBC’s decision. He said he was recently chatted with “another big time broadcasting executive” who was “complaining that [MSNBC] had cancelled the simulcast twelve hours before we were getting ready to conduct this radio-thon for these three charities.”

Imus: “My position on all of this is not whining about the hideously hypocritical coverage from the newspapers — from everybody — or the lack of support, say, from people like Harold Ford, Jr. who I had my life threatened over supporting and all these kind of things. It all began, and it doesn’t make any difference — like [James] Carville said — stop talking about the context, it doesn’t make any difference. If I hadn’t have said it I wouldn’t be here. So let’s stop whining about it…You gotta stop complaining. I said a stupid, idiotic thing that desperately hurt these kids. I’m going to apologize but we gotta move on.”

UPDATE 7:37 am. IMUS: “The hypocrisy is absurd…Everybody knows what the deal is. And this is not over. This story does not end here.”

Imus also gave a shout-out to Opie & Anthony, who support Imus on this issue.

UPDATE 7:57:

Imus says he spoke with MSNBC Senior VP Phil Griffin and said “some of the stuff that MSNBC has done this morning is frankly unethical and I’ve asked them to stop doing it.”

But also said, “I’m not whining about the coverage. I’m not whining about any aspect of this.”

“I’ve said 100 times: I said it and if I hadn’t said it, we wouodn’t be sitting here talking about it. And that’s the bottom line.”

Imus also said that losing television (via MSNBC) isn’t as big as losing radio. “The big part of the program is radio. There’s millions of people listening to the radio. At best a few hundred thousand are watching television.”

On MSNBC’s decision: “I understand the pressure they were under. I’m not stupid.”

UPDATE 8:15am: Speaking with an African-American woman, whose son had spent time at the Imus Ranch, Imus said, “And I want to say to you as an African-American woman, I’m sorry for what I said…I want to apologize to all African-American women.” The woman said, “Okay, I accept that.”

UPDATE 8:19AM: Imus said that one of the “sad ironies of my stupidity” is that, at his ranch, “we sent six kids home because they couldn’t stop calling girls bitches and hos.”

UPDATE 8:21AM: “I want to thank Opie & Anthony…I love them and I love what they do. I know they offend people perhaps more than I do. They’re good loyal guys…Even Howard [Stern] hasn’t been horrible.” (Although if you read this Stern show summary, seems like Stern still has his claws out against his longtime nemesis.) UPDATE 8:28AM: Imus says that he’s had “a lot of big people in the media” calling him “whining about the hypocrsity in the coverage. We understand that. You just turn on the cable channels or read the newspaper, trying to portray me as some vicious racist or whatever and there’s not one person talking about the other things I’ve done…There’s a difference between premeditated murder and a gun going off…But you’ve got to take your medicine. I’m not whining about it.”

“Don’t tell me that context isn’t important. Context is importnat in everything we do in our lives. But it’s not an excuse.”

UPDATE 8:38AM: Despite the controversy, Imus says contributions for The Tomorrows Children Fund and the Imus Ranch are “way, way up” compared to this time in the show last year, which is significant because “the money’s more important this year than ever.”

He added: “These bastards went after me. They got me. But they didn’t catch me asleep.”

UPDATE 8:44AM: MSNBC’s Imus webpage is still up, with a statement and link to Imus’ charities.

UPDATE 8:45am: “One day you’ve got a radio and tv show and one day you don’t…Ordinarily we need to raise $3 million, this year we need to raise $100 million — just in case (Laughter).”

UPDATE 8:57AM: Tells his friends, “Don’t call me telling me that the coverage is unfair…If I hadn’t said it, there’d be no coverage…Shut up about it…I’ve been dishing it out for a long time, and now it’s my turn…I’m not going to whine about it.”

Imus also lets readers know that he’s doing today’s show in the MSNBC studio.

UPDATE 9:01AM: Charlie McCord says that they’ve raised over $400,000.

UPDATE 9:10AM: On MSNBC:I understand their decision.” “I appreciate them letting us use their studio this morning.”

To “all of my friends in the media, out of the media: You can’t whine about this…We wouldn’t have been there if I hadn’t said it.”

He again called media coverage “outrageously hypocritical.”

“Harold Ford, Jr. has been disgraceful in his lack of support. I endured death threats to endorse him…It’s unfortunate that he has no courage.”

“I’m not surprised by any of this. I’m not surprised at the hypocrisy of Al Sharpton, of Jesse Jackson or any of these people. But you can’t whine about it.”

“We can talk about all the good work that I’ve done forever, but I still said that. I’m not making any excuses. Everybody’s got to stop whining and quit talking about it.”

UPDATE 9:25AM: “I’ve dished it out for a long time and now it’s my time to take it. That’s fine. Bring it on.”

UPDATE 9:28AM: After one guest said “kick ass,” then followed that with “can I say that?” Imus said, “I think today you can say anything.”

UPDATE 9:37: “We’ve never done this well before” (regarding the radiothon)

UPDATE 9:38: On meeting with the Rutgers basketball players: “I can’t go through the rest of my life — nor can they — without us having this conversation and me telling them how I feel and, more importantly, them telling me how they feel.”

They Talk About Barrack, They Want Hillary

April 2nd, 2007 by Vinny

And I’m quite happy

“We are overwhelmed by the tremendous enthusiasm and historic response this campaign has received so far,” campaign manager Patti Solis Doyle said today. “Going forward we are poised to continue this success and make even more history.”

Specifically, the campaign noted several key numbers demonstrating the overwhelming depth and breadth of Clinton’s support:

$26 million raised in new receipts since launching her campaign on January 20

80 % of the contributions were $100 or less.

$4.2 million raised on the internet (including $1 million in a week during the One Week, One Million campaign, and nearly $600,000 online in the 36 hours preceding the deadline)

$6 million in total grassroots donations (internet plus direct mail and telemarketing receipts)

50,000 donors (tens of thousands of them new donors)

Contributions received from residents of all 50 states (plus Washington, DC)

$10 million transferred from Senator Clinton’s successful senate reelection account

In March of 2003, the highest total reported by a Democratic campaign in its first-quarter fundraising report was $7.4 million and the top four candidates combined raised just over $23 million. In March of 1999, incumbent Vice President Al Gore reported $8.9 million for his first quarter.

Considering the buzz Barrack Obama’s getting, you would think we’d be reading these kind of numbers about him…

But we aren’t…

Because he doesn’t represent anything…

Go Hill!

MMMMM… Donuts…

March 10th, 2007 by Vinny

From the Boston Globe:

 Resize Bonzai-Fba Globe Photo 2007 03 08 1173409928 5241 410W

Good idea, DD… Now if you could only replace some of the savages behind the counter and start making half-decent coffee, I’d actually have a whole new respect for ya!

Dunkin’ Donuts has a new pitchwoman: TV personality Rachael Ray .

As the Canton chain looks to expand nationally and get beyond its doughnut heritage, Ray’s philosophy of better-for-you food seems to make her ideal for the role.

But she has baggage; there are websites where Ray-bashing is blood sport, and some demonize her as a poor person’s Martha Stewart .

On one site after Dunkin’s disclosure yesterday, someone wrote: “Nooo!!! Pulling ALL my hair out!!”

Still, president Bob Hoffman of Boston ad agency Gearon Hoffman said Dunkin’ made a smart choice.

He once explored using Ray in an ad campaign for Crock-Pot that didn’t pan out, and he recalled that Ray’s personality scores were “off the charts,” with her appeal far outweighing any negatives.

Hoffman said of Ray’s detractors: “This country is full of unbelievably nasty people. Don’t they have anything better to do?”

Rachael Ray is about as “every woman” as people get. She has a great “regular person” appeal, she’s not rail thin and anorexic… I mean, in reality, people should be standing up and cheering.

I do get the bit about her being overexposed, but I still think she’s a perfect choice for DD.
